I know a lot of folks have been biting their fingernails to the quick with worry over the latest national polling data. However, the state polls have been pretty friendly to Obama. Why the discrepancy? The national polls have a pretty reasonably sized margin of error; most of them sit around 2 to 4 percentage points. The state polls also have a pretty good sized margin of error, but taken together, the margin of error is much smaller.

We've been enjoying (with gritting teeth) the Republicans' weak attempts to counterprogram the DNC (the pathetic party for PUMA's at a nondescript bar in Denver, etc). Our opposition has a habit of using dirty tricks at election time, with varying degrees of success. A positive possibility for counterprogramming below the fold.

This will necessarily be brief. Colbert just interviewed an astronaut on the space station. It was fantastic! I can't figure out who was more thrilled the astronaut (complete with Wriststrong bracelet) or Colbert. It is my belief that this is something which is great for our understanding of our scientific endeavours. The American public will support science more vehemently if they have more exposure to it. Any ideas?

Hillary and McCain showed themselves to be of the same timber today in suggesting that we should institute a Gas Tax Holiday. This is a foolish idea, but it gives Obama a crucial opportunity to show his progressive leadership. McCain will simply allow the revenue to dissapear, while Hillary suggested a windfall profits tax on oil producers, an idea which has a difficult history.
Economically, the tax holiday concept has proven to be a lemon. By engaging in this sort of pandering, the other two campaigns are showing themselves to be practitioners of politics as usual.
This is an opportunity for Obama to show real leadership. As opposed to a windfall profits tax to counteract the effects of the rather foolish tax holiday, Obama should consider a proactive solution to the real, overarching problem. Perhaps a tax on the excess production of fuel over say, 1990, levels. More on that another time.

So the Cubs lost. Was it the Fool on the Left Field Line? Dusty's tendencies towards starter abuse? The black hole that was the bottom of our lineup? Mediocre relief pitching? No matter. This is not an entry for scapegoating. In the comments, I would like to start discussing possible moves the Cubs could make to improve.
A starting point: Subtractions: Karros, Estes, Goodwin, one of our unoffensive catchers, Grud, O'Leary, Alfonsucka.
