The state of Arizona has passed the most stringent, draconian immigration law in the United States. Proposition SB-1070's impact on millions of Hispanics--both legal and illegal immigrants--will be profound. For the first time, law enforcement will be given a broad swath of powers to stop, seize and detain those they believe may be in the country illegally. The new law, signed last week by Arizona governor Jan Brewer, has caused widespread consternation and fear of increased racial profiling.

For an indeterminate amount of time, black leaders in black communities have carried the banner and led the charge for equality. With progress and the realization of long denied promise in the form of Barack Obama--the nation's first black president-- comes a new form of turmoil and myopia in black leadership. The problem with having power is having to wield it, and clearly leadership in black America is undergoing a crisis of affective power management. Most did not realize that having the first black president would not be a cure-all for the ills that plague black America.

The winding path that led to health care reform was maddeningly vicious-- due mainly to the intense rhetoric and numbingly personal attacks on the product, and the people responsible for it. The fact that this legislation was even crafted and signed into law at all was miraculous, considering the most polarizing political climate in 50 years. But there was a clear, determined focus that steadied the reins of the rapidly sinking ship. Barack Obama has secured his place in history as one of the most resilient, and potentially successful presidents in American history. This fact is beyond dispute. And the manner in which it was accomplished is as remarkable as it is American.

Harold Ford Jr. is gearing up to run for the senate in the state of New York. Mr. Ford is about as authentic a New Yorker as new Massachusetts senator Scott Brown. Even though Ford lacks that authenticity, he more than makes up for it with real, overflowing pomposity.
