In a word: passion. The successful messagers out there are able to defend their convictions with 100% personal certainty. It makes no difference if the belief or the backing for the belief has any grounds in reality; they're always right, the "Left" is always wrong. Let the facts bubble up to where it's absolutely impossible to maintain the tenet: they were still right, just maybe taken out of context or "demonized" by the "Left" who twisted their words.
