I just ran a search on Daily Kos for any mention of the Temple Israel synagogue attack earlier today which left the shooter dead and a security guard injured. Not a peep.
Anyway, here’s what happened via the Detroit News:
Temple Israel synagogue shooting leaves gunman dead, kids safe
West Bloomfield Township — A gunman rammed his truck into a West Bloomfield Township synagogue Thursday afternoon and then opened fire on the temple, exchanging gunfire with security guards before he was killed.
The shooting happened before 1 p.m. at Temple Israel at 5725 Walnut Lake Road, west of Orchard Lake Road and east of Drake. The gunman rammed his truck through the synagogue's front doors and then engaged with security guards, said Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard. It appeared no one else was injured.
Members of the synagogue, some of whom rushed to the scene to check on their children who attend Temple Israel's school, were told via text before 1:30 p.m.: "Lockdown is still in place, but the active shooter has been taken down. Lockdown will be in place until they know that the shooter was working alone. All kids and all staff accounted for and fine. Truck rammed into front door and opened fire."
Temple Israel is the largest reform synagogue in the United States, with over 3,300 members. They have a large daycare center; thankfully all of the children & teachers are safe and accounted for.
There’s about a dozen other synagogues in the immediate area, including my own which is only 2 miles away.
Meanwhile, there was also a shooting at Old Dominion University in Virginia this morning which no one has written anything about yet either:
Gunman in fatal Old Dominion University shooting ID'd as convicted ISIS supporter, officials say
The shooter opened fire just before 10:49 a.m. at ODU's Constant Hall in Norfolk, Virginia, killing one person and wounding two others. The gunman is also dead.
The gunman who opened fire Thursday morning at Old Dominion University, killing one person and wounding two others, was identified by officials as a man previously convicted of providing material support to ISIS.
The shooter was identified as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, 36, of Sterling, Virginia, two senior law enforcement officials briefed on the matter told NBC News. He was also killed in the shooting.
I guess it’s just another day in America, ho hum…
UPDATE: I’ve tweaked the headline & wording above to remove the acerbic tone. I’m Jewish, have family in West Bloomfield and live near Temple Israel myself so as you can imagine I’m a bit on edge today.
UPDATE: OK, here’s the details on the synagogue attacker:
It is unknown what ignited the flames. Meanwhile, police sources told FOX 2's Jessica Dupnack that a chemical agent was found inside the truck that rammed the building, indicating that some sort of explosive device was inside the suspect vehicle.
...FOX News reported that the suspect has been identified as 41-year-old Ayman Mohamad Ghazali. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed the name to FOX News.
Officials said he was born in Lebanon in 1985 and entered the US on May 10, 2011 on an IR1 immigrant visa as the spouse of a U.S. citizen.
FOX News reports that according to DHS, Ghazali applied for naturalization on Oct. 20, 2015 and became a U.S. citizen on Feb. 5, 2016.
