Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share a virtual kitchen table with other readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by to talk about music, your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper…. Newcomers may notice that many who post in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table and hope to make some new friends as well.
Time’s a ticking…
People of the Kitchen, I don’t have to tell you that Kentucky needs a new Senator, one who will actually help the people of Kentucky. Actually, we all need Mitch to retire for reasons well known and lengthy. The most recent is his stonewalling of much needed pandemic relief while forcing through the confirmation of an ideologue to the Supreme Court. Dislodging him may not be easy but if it’s going to happen, this year is the year.
You can help.
How to enter to win the Ditch Mitch Quilt
We are going to have a drawing on Monday, October 19, from all the entries we have received up through midnight of October 18 (Eastern time). There are two ways you can enter:
- Go to the Ditch Mitch Quilt page on ActBlue and make a donation of at least $10. All the funds raised will go to the McGrath campaign.
- Write an essay of at least 50 words stating why you think it’s time to Ditch Mitch, and send it to DitchMitchQuilt@gmail.com.
You can only enter once a day, but you can enter on as many days as you want.
And today there is a little extra incentive…
A mini- drawing today! Anyone entering, either by donation or by essay today has a chance of winning a set of five cotton face masks made by my sister and myself. You can pick your own fabrics shown here on this Flickr page.
Some some background on the quilt from Bruce…
Well, it’s a combination of efforts of Sara Reed, Laura Jansen, and Bruce Maples:
- Sara cut and pieced all the squares and shipped them to Bruce.
- Bruce took them around Kentucky, including to the capitol in Frankfort, and got people to write their own messages on the squares (with some help from a friend in the capitol!).
- Then Laura took those squares and created the quilt you see here.
And guess what — YOU can have it for your very own … but the contest ends THIS COMING SUNDAY!
Some special features of this unique quilt
- Many of the squares have signatures and messages from people across Kentucky and even across the nation, including some of our elected officials.
- AND, if we can catch up with her while she flies herself (literally) across the state (she’s a pilot, remember), we’re going to get Amy McGrath to sign it as well!
- The quilt squares are made from scraps from other quilts, so there are many fun things portrayed in the quilt, including popcorn, peanuts, fried chicken wings, and … cats.
- The center of the quilt is a print of men’s watches and that is surrounded by a rusty orange colored fabric that is printed with the Preamble of the Constitution.
I don’t have much money to donate to candidates myself but I designed and made the patches of this quilt. Bruce and Laura did the rest. But I hope it will help Amy McGrath win. Mitch is strangling our democracy. It’s not okay.
The weekend begins now. Come in, be comfortable, and share your day, your weekend plans, your menus! This is an open thread.
Anyone else mailing Vote Forward letters tomorrow for the Big Send? There is still time to write a few.
