Here is a profound and glaring hypocrisy in our failure to craft gun laws that work: GOP legislatures across the country passed law after law to combat the imaginary problem of in-person voter fraud. Since the year 2000, the likelihood of this occurrence is 1 in 15 million. Conversely, during that time, almost 400,000 people in America have been killed by guns.

In the Declaration of Independence, the first inalienable right that is mentioned is life. Shouldn't our greatest efforts as a nation be geared toward the preservation of life? We can ascertain certain costs for gun violence in dollars and cents such as medical and court expenditures.

Yet, how do we tabulate the expense of the empty chair at the dining room table, the nightmares that haunt the sleeping hours of little ones or the pain and suffering of communities as they struggle to pick up the pieces in the wake of a gun-related massacre?

Much has been said regarding the wealthiest 1% of Americans who have tremendous economic and political power in this country, but that is another subject for another time. Today I would like to talk about the other (less-talked about) 1 percent. According to the 2010 Census, the population of the United States is 308,745,538. Including active duty, National Guard and reserves, the population of Americans in uniform is 2,317,761, meaning that less than1 percent, .75 percent to be exact, of the country's population is a member of the military.

In light of the recent report that shows that during this current recession the already-wide racial wealth gap has grown even more wide, I thought it would be appropriate to post a series I wrote in 2007 when I was a contributing editor for the Black Agenda Report. Regrettably, the information is just as prescient now as it was then.

In part seven, I attempted to tell the untold story about the predicament of Black males during the economic boom of the nineties and what the governmental and societal response to the black victims of Hurricane Katrina tells us about where we are today.

Today marks the conclusion of the series with part eight. What are the real dollar costs of this deep and abiding racism? What should our response be to these extremely troubling realities?
