Is Rep Bart Gordon trying to screw Obama on Space?

Last week, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation held a hearing on the future of human spaceflight. The witness list included both supporters and opponents of Obama's proposed NASA budget. Next week there will be another hearing, on the House side. Only this time, there will be mostly opponents of Obama's proposal. Why is Bart Gordon, who chairs the committee, and can add alternative viewpoints (including supporters of Obama's proposal or the Direct proposal), basically limiting it to people supporting George Bush's failed Constellation?

Well, for those of you who don't know, there has been a lot going on regarding space policy, by President Obama. First, he created the Augustine Committee, to review Project Constellation. The results from that report were rather controversial, but signaled that things might have to change. Then, earlier this year, Obama released his budget, which I fully support. However, Congress, as well as some state leaders, have loudly condemned it. There have even been reports of a supposed plan B (later demonstrated to be nowhere near as big as first reported).

Now, it sounds like President Obama is coming out to defend his proposed budget, with a space summit.

In a previous diary, I talked about Obama's push for commercial space. And in a couple of other diaries, I talked about 2 of the shuttle replacements that are being worked on - The SpaceX Dragon/Falcon 9, and the Orbital Science Corporation's Cygnus/Taurus 2. But thats not the end, and it won't be just 1 vehicle.

Let me introduce you to vehicle number 3, the Boeing-Bigelow Aerospace & United Launch Alliance's Orion-lite/Atlas V 402

In a previous diary, I said that there were multiple shuttle replacements on the way. And in a separate diary, I showed the first one, and probably the most well known - The SpaceX Dragon/Falcon 9 combo. Let me introduce you to the next one.

Orbital Science Corporation's Cygnus/Taurus 2 - also developed for the NASA COTS program (same as the Falcon 9/Dragon)

I was suppose to be in DC this week, helping to sell President Obama's new ambitious human space program. Yes, thats right, it is human, it is ambitious, and its very cool. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate. That has me rather annoyed

In addition, I am getting rather sick and tired of the teabaggers (or the space equivalent to teabaggers) that have invaded some of the space blogs (and there are a ton). So, instead, I thought I'd tell you why I support the new NASA plan (although I will admit it is a work in progress).

In case you haven't seen it, there is a report over at the Wall Street Journal. The title of the article isWhite House Decides to Outsource NASA Work. However, I feel the article probably should've been White House Decides to Privatize NASA work. Or a better title would've been White House Decides to use NASA to Launch a New Industry
