Last week’s decision by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to deny New York City’s request to ban soda purchases in the city’s Food Stamp Program (now known as SNAP) may have been a blessing in disguise.

Supporters of the ban decried a supposed lost opportunity to reduce obesity, and opponents, myself included, hailed the decision as a wise rejection of a counter-productive attempt to create a double-standard for low-income consumers that would ultimately do little to improve public health. Yet I am hopeful that the decision will prompt both sides to re-set the table on the obesity debate in order to develop a more comprehensive, mutually agreeable plan for enabling Americans in poverty to obtain more nutritious food.

In a land not too far away and a time not too long ago (in the United States, in the 1970's, actually), Republicans and Democrats worked together to solve major national problems.

The massive effort to fight domestic hunger was a prime example of this bi-partisan cooperation.

As I explained in today's NY Daily News, when my grandparents came to this country, about 100 years ago, the majority of Americans could still build a better life for their children and grandchildren by working hard and playing by the rules.

The people who rose to become wealthy often did so by inventing things and producing products – such as cars or televisions – that bolstered the economic growth and material well-being for society as a whole. Some titans of industry, such as Henry Ford, believed they had to pay their workers a middle-class salary so that they could afford to buy the products they made, but those industrialists who resisted paying high wages were eventually forced to do so by unions and government minimum wage hikes.

To tackle our interconnected food, nutrition, and poverty crises, the federal government should launch a "Good Food, Good Jobs" initiative.

Modeled after the "green jobs" concept, "Good Food, Good Jobs" would create jobs through projects and businesses that bring healthier food to low-income areas. Food and job deserts could become new oases of economic recovery and healthy living. Missouri State Representative Cynthia Davis, lambasted by Keith Olbermann last night (June 22, 2009) as a "Worst person in the World" for opposing summer meals for low-income kids based on her belief that "hunger can be a positive motivator," is, ironically, one of Missouri’s leading pro-life activists.

Now that President-elect Obama and the House leadership have teamed up to propose a economic recovery package that is the most far-reaching piece of major domestic legislation in a generation, it’s time for bloggers and grass-roots activists to stop nit-picking every decision and utterance of Obama and his team and instead focus our energies on helping implement his courageous agenda.

Dr. Martin Luther King had more than one dream.

Of course, King dreamt of racial reconciliation, and January 20th's inauguration of Barack Obama demonstrates the nation's enormous, albeit inconsistent and incomplete, racial progress.

King also called for making service to others a centerpiece of American life, saying "Everybody can be great because anybody can serve." The Obama inauguration is perfectly honoring that legacy by marking Dr. King's birthday as a national day of community service.

But the King dream that was perhaps the most fiercely opposed during his time -- and has been most overlooked since his death -- was his call to slash poverty in the U.S. and ensure that all Americans had enough to eat.
