Sheikh Jarrah, East Jerusalem --- The entire world was shocked yesterday when this reporter revealed that retired electrician, Ehud David Netanyolmert, shook the peace process to its roots by building an illegal second bathroom in his East Jerusalem home.

In a recent diary I suggested that Daily Kos should ban calls for the elimination of Israel. One prominent Daily Kos participant responded with this:

What in the HELL are you talking about? Who is advocatig for the "Destruction of Israel"?

I was not really surprised at the response because I assume that the person who wrote it is not necessarily that familiar with Daily Kos I-P. I should have provided links in that diary so that people could see what I was talking about, but I assumed that anyone interested enough to comment would probably already know what I was talking about. And what I was talking about, of course, is the perpetual demonization of the Jewish state on this blog and the calls to eliminate it, usually through advocacy for the so-called “single-state solution.”

Daily Kos already has a policy banning some of the more toxic and outrageous views floating around in the blogosphere. Conspiracy theories are out on Daily Kos and for good reason. This site is devoted to electing more and better Democrats. That’s the goal. And it is for this reason that theories suggesting that the US government, for example, was behind 9/11 are verboten here. Not only is the suggestion pretty much ridiculous on its face, it is entirely counterproductive toward the purpose of the site and would undermine Daily Kos’s reputation if such theories were allowed to gain traction at the Big Orange.

I would like to propose that advocacy for the elimination of Israel be likewise banned. There is nothing the least little bit wrong with advocating for justice for the Palestinian people. There is also nothing the least little bit wrong with criticizing Israel, so long as one recognizes the difference between criticism and defamation. However, calls for the destruction of the Jewish state are on another level entirely and are deeply offensive to most Jewish people.

Whatever anyone might think about Rumsfeld, that is actually a very smart statement and something that should be held in mind. For, indeed, there are known knowns, known unknowns, and unknown unknowns. That is, there are things that we know that we know. There are things that we know we do not know. And there are things that we do not know that we do not know.

The liberal-progressive movement in the United States and Europe is forcing liberal Jews to make some very difficult choices. The voices who dominate the I-P discussion on the left are telling liberal Jews that they must make a choice; they can support Israel or they can support the progressive movement, but they cannot support both. This is not stated explicitly, of course, but it is the implication embedded in the never-ending disdain and contempt heaped upon the Jewish state by those liberals who claim to speak for human rights… even as they almost entirely ignore horrendous human rights violations by China or Russia or various African countries, not to mention the so-called Coalition of the Willing.

As the Daily Kos I-P community struggles to find solace in the unfortunate departure of the beloved Keith Moon, I think that it is important that we not only acknowledge our loss, but recognize that we can go forward and that we will go forward. The pain we are suffering, the emptiness in our hearts where Keith once resided, will heal in time. And although any attempt to catalog the debt that we owe to Keith is impossible, we all understand that his legacy, the example he set as a quintessential American Original, will not fade.

According to Ha’aretz:

The death toll from Tuesday's 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Haiti could be between 45,000 and 50,000, with another three million people hurt or homeless, a senior Haitian Red Cross official said on Thursday.

We all know, of course, that those figures are tentative and that the death-toll might be much higher. As Olbermann said last night, it could be 5,000 or 50,000 or 500,000. We simply do not know, yet.

Nonetheless, I am pleased to notice that Israel is among the countries sending aid.

So, there I was, Saturday afternoon, standing on the corner of Haight and Fillmore waiting for the number 6 bus, with the treacly odor of dope wafting around me and thinking hard about cassoulet. Or, as my friend Julia would put it, cassoulet de porc et de mouton, AKA, baked beans with pork and lamb. Cassoulet sounds fancy, now doesn’t it? Elegant. But, really, it’s just French grub. It’s as much the food of grunts as gourmands. It’s baked beans with meat.

Meteor Blades has requested of several I-P regulars, including myself, that we put forward what we think a reasonable peace might look like. His purpose is, I think, to demonstrate that most pro-Palestinian advocates have considerably more in common with most pro-Israel advocates on Daily Kos than one might think given the never-ending vitriol. I was foolish enough to agree to this request and below are a few of my thoughts on the matter. Pretty standard stuff, really. The two-state solution.

This is just sad.

The Jerusalem Post is reporting that:

Israeli sources confirmed on Thursday Yemeni media reports that the overwhelming majority of the final remnant of Yemen's ancient Jewish community, numbering some 250 people, are looking to leave the country due to persecution and violence.

Wherever any one of us may fall along the exceedingly contentious I-P spectrum, I think that we can all agree that seeing the last remnants of this ancient Jewish community in flight from persecution is... well?... sad.

It's just sad.

For a long time, now, I have been suggesting that left anti-Zionism often serves as a shroud for anti-Semitism and that the constant vilification and demonization of Israel is anti-Semitic when the people doing that vilifying ignore Darfur and Congo and Sri Lanka and the Chinese in Tibet.

I must admit that I was wrong and I hereby issue an apology.

I live in San Francisco and I love my town. Some months ago there was a protest against Israel’s Gaza incursion and here are a few photos demonstrating just how wrong I was.

Let’s get directly to the matter, shall we?

This nice lady carried a sign reading, "Jews are terroist!" I am not certain what a "terroist" is, but criticism of Israel is not, I repeat, NOT anti-Semitism. By the way, aren't her daughters as cute as little anti-Zionist buttons?
