Connect! Unite! Act! is a weekly series encouraging the creation of face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups meet to socialize, support candidates, get out the vote, and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert maximum influence on the powers that be. Do you ever look down at your phone, see a phone number or a name appear on caller ID and think, “Who the heck is this person? I don’t know this person—why are they calling?” You quickly send back a text of “Can’t talk now,” or some other automated response. Click. When you listen to the voicemail they leave (or you read it if you use some app like YouMail), than you find out that the person calling you was actually a campaign worker who was hoping to make sure you and your family turn out to vote in the upcoming election. You know you plan to vote. You always plan to vote. You also know it is their job to follow up on voters. I may have my own theory on where more time should be spent. As an example, spending a lot of time calling campaign donors to see if they plan to vote is time that maybe could be devoted elsewhere, but still, if you want to do something that helps the campaign you are supporting, lowers the workload on campaign workers, and makes sure your phone stays a bit more silent, in this edition of Connect! Unite! Act!, I have the solution for you!

Money. We all want some, we all need at least some, and while money won’t buy you happiness, being destitute can certainly cause you great sorrow. You can lose your family, your living conditions, your health, and opportunities. Our culture loves money. Douglas Adams in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy said: “This planet has - or rather had - a problem, which was this: most of the people living on it were unhappy for pretty much of the time. Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movement of small green pieces of paper, which was odd because on the whole it wasn't the small green pieces of paper that were unhappy.”

At what point, though, does having money stop being about trying to get by or even setting up a better future for your progeny and start becoming about sheer avarice? “Avarice” is a term you don’t see used often very much anymore; it refers to extreme greed. Yet extreme greed has become the driving force behind too many decisions in our country. How do we address this from a morals and values position?

I am an absolute sucker for Pixar films. I love almost all of them, and some of them mean a great deal to me. Pixar’s Up! remains one of my absolute favorites because of the difficult themes the story takes on. A story that begins with a miscarriage, transitions to a film about finding your place in the world, and culminates with an older man finding a role again to guide and mentor a young boy toward becoming a good man, Up! is a film that has left me in tears multiple times watching it. I find something beautiful, tragic, and inspiring about it every time I see it. As I watched President Joe Biden speak to the nation this last week, I thought a lot about Carl. When faced with great difficulties and an out-of-control rich fake, Carl stands up to the phony and protects a young man to help him become the person he is meant to be. Isn’t that what many of us want? A leader who exemplifies someone that knows what it means to experience loss, to mourn it, and to want to guide us toward our best possible outcome while steering us clear of the dangers in the world? That is exactly the image President Biden gave us.

This past week, articles talking about “quiet quitting” have appeared all over the internet. This started based on a set of articles complaining that younger workers are doing the unthinkable: They leave when their shift is over, and they go home. That’s right. They go home. They are officially “clocked out.” Growing up, one of the best moments on TV was watching Fred Flintstone see the bell signaling the end of the workday, making a dash to his foot-powered car, and rushing home. People could relate and no one had any other expectations. All of that changed with the arrival of the cell phone and then the internet. Phone calls could be answered off hours, on a company-provided phone. You always had email. Working at a company when pagers were first rolled out to managers, a manager said to the group: “Well, I guess you have us all on a leash now.” That was 1997.

Welcome back to Connect! Unite! Act! When I started writing Connect! Unite! Act! again last year, I wanted to take time to highlight the ways Daily Kos users interact with each other, build communities, and form strong relationships. During COVID, we’ve had a lot of strain put on our systems. It is easy to feel out of touch, or to miss relationships that transcend the digital.

Daily Kos groups are a great way to remind each other of things that extend beyond what we believe, but also who we are, what we enjoy, where we have fun, and all of the things that make us uniquely human. In the past, I’ve used Daily Kos to write movie reviews of films I truly enjoyed. Others have used Daily Kos to talk about food, music, or anything else that can unite them together in shared ideas. What makes life special is that we share our loves with others and we embrace the things that we love. That’s why this week, I wanted to talk about a group that can help pick up your spirits. We all feel a bit grumpy lately. The Supreme Court. Donald Trump. State courts. Out-of-control state legislatures. Governors who want to take away rights and hold onto power however they can. It can seem a bit daunting, can’t it?
