Online Explosion in Kansas Scares GOP

Two very strange things happened yesterday in Kansas politics. First, a US Senate Campaign run by Rep. Jerry Moran, was brought to its knees by an April Fools joke on a blog. Second, KSGOP members expressed serious concern about an open government wiki and went so far as to call on supervision of these left-wing radicals.

It all began when the morning blog post on the local Kansas blog Kansas Jackass posted that Rep. Jerry Moran was pulling out of his US Senate race - fake statement below:

"When I first announced I planned to seek a seat in the United States Senate, I knew the commitment I was potentially agreeing to was a substantial and difficult to assume burden.

After many weeks of considering and reconsidering what might be in my future, I believe I have come to the conclusion that I should probably end my campaign for the United States Senate and instead run for re-election to the United States House of Representatives."

In an interesting development, one of the only four losing democratic incumbent congressional races in the country is speaking out. Second Congressional District Rep. Nancy Boyda's campaign manager Chad Manspeaker has posted an inspirational blog on the Kansas blog Everyday Citizen calling for a greater need for youth outreach and leadership development for youth in the state.

After a tough year in Kansas that made only a net gain of one state house seat and lost a US Congressional seat, democrats in Kansas are bitter sweet. Inspiration for hometown favorite Barack Obama came out in force with a gain of 4% over Kerry's loss in Kansas in 2004. Obama also garnered a 65,000 vote gain since 2004. Yet even with those benefits, Kansas was unable to create any local benefits for itself.

This morning's Topeka Capitol Journal says democrats in the state have no bench of candidates ready to step up and run for any statewide seats much less to seriously oppose the now 3 members of Congress in Kansas.

Just a few short weeks before the election Montana's Republican Party Director has resigned. No, not to spend more time with his family, but instead to "take another opportunity" in the private sector.... riiight...

This comes after a controversy I reported on earlier this month in gest, but the long and short is that 6,000 voters on the rolls in Missoula were challenged by the GOP, but when asked for the list of people "challenged" so that those folks could be checked out or would know that their registration was being challenged, the GOP said they wouldn't hand over the list. This just SCREAMS of dirty tactics.

Matt Segal, of the Student Association for Voter Empowerment (SAVE), and Forward Montana questioned the criminality of the MT GOP. In an op-ed by Segal, where he proposed criminal charges for those using these tactics:

For one small year Boyda Bloc, a local blog has lead the way in to covering the Second District Congressional Race. One of the most hotly contested races in the country this election, people were starving for information about the two republican challengers that were fighting out their chances to oppose one term democratic Representative Nancy Boyda who beat 5 term incumbent Jim Ryun in 2006.

The blog gleefully held the market on the race and often times was the most read state blog in Kansas (other than us of course). Weekly the anonymous team offered stories promoting the work Boyda was doing and poked fun at republican challengers Lynn Jenkins, the state Treasurer in Kansas, and former Rep. Jim Ryun who couldn't let his 2006 loss go. They also provided unique youtube videos hitting the republicans or promoting the democrat, and weekly "photo caption contests" where readers could make fun of the republicans themselves.

But last month the blog went dark.

In the latest Maureen Dowd column in the Times, I found a Maureen Dowd paragraph and an Aaron Sorkin dream conversation between Obama and fictional president Bartlet ala the West Wing.

I love Sorkin, I always have. I thought the column wasn't bad. It wasn't great... it wasn't bad. The piece instructs Obama to essentially find his balls he seems to have lost since many of the post-primary consultants came on and started moving him to the center. Ball Loss Syndrome (BLS) is a difficult problem in politics, that typically comes after a new hire has convinced the candidate to be something else for fear he/she might lose. BLS affects more each year.

Symptoms of BLS include: Pandering, commercials talking in front of a flag or church, pictures with dogs, buying dogs, decreased online outreach, increased tv media buys... It is on both sides of the isle: McCain lost his balls sometime around the 2004 election when he traded in Maverick for Panderer. Obama only recently lost his balls when he seems to have decided he didn't want to upset anyone.

These are two of my new "friends". Princella and Richard, who (despite their republicanism) are remarkable young leaders. Wednesday, I met with many of the Young Republicans in the party who can't help but notice that the stereotypes of old, white, men are more valid than they would like.

Leaders from the popular youth blog HipHopRepublican.com sat down with me to talk about opportunities that their party could harness if they were only willing to do the kind of outreach that Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama's campaign does.

The young people all have ambitions to achieve goals or run for office, but they are fighting an uphill battle in a tough establishment world. Its the one thing that we as young democrats share with them. Their optimism reigns supreme, however, and they push mountains in efforts to move their party to something a little more mainstream or at the very least reflective of the 21st Century.

At a time when organizations across the country are focused on increasing voter registration, the Student Association for Voter Empowerment (SAVE) has worked hard to make sure that when those newly registered voters go to the polls, their votes will count.

Today the movement to protect our votes will take a giant leap forward when SAVE teamed up with Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois and Congresswoman Jan Shakowsky of Illinois and Congressman Steve LaTourette of Ohio present the Student VOTER Bill of 2008.

Last Sunday.. ish ... I posted a blogthat got some stellar play among some of our faith based liberal friends who addressed some serious flaws and flubs among our democratic hopefuls and party loyals.

One of my favorite political passages in many years. I'm a lurker in evangelical blogs, and they're starting to come around to the above line of thought (what took so long? That's the real question). If it weren't for abortion, I really think the Dems would have a large minority or even a majority of evangelicals. That issue will force some hard strategic and ideological decisions in the next two years (spoken as a die-hard, almost single-issue, pro-choicer).

And it turns a mind to wonder.... What do you suppose would happen if instead of just having the right stance, spinning it as a health issue, or sitting back and hoping and praying that no one brings it up we actually challenge them on it?
