In response to the strong and mixed reactions I got from my
previous diary and poll
, I thought I might explain/redeem myself with something more constructive. The following represents a new way to frame the "gay marriage" debate, one which is undeniably positive and about rights and equality rather than marriage. It is by no means complete, or even well-worded from a clarity and legal standpoint. But it is a starting point, hopefully the Kos community can help me refine it.

To preface this, I have a sister who is a huge activist for GLBT organizations and a wife who is liberal with a capital "L" but admits in her heart she sees marriage as something between a man and a woman. I love them both very much, and have had the following conversation with both before the election. Obviously, what we now know about the election has brought this issue to the fore. My sister and my wife don't necessarily agree with me, but they understand the reasoning and I hope you will too. That being said, here's my argument. We shouldn't be pushing for gay "marriage," even though it's what justice demands. Civil unions are likely the only way to provide equal rights and also not divide this country along religious lines.

Speaking as an independent who always seeks a moderate from any party, the thing that saddens me most about this election is the perceived mandate the neocon-right now feels it has. There was plenty of talk prior to the election about the potential for a "civil war" within the Republican party, because a sound defeat would mean the neocon "experiment" had been refuted by the people. Now we have just the opposite. So, to centrist independents, libertarians, educated churchgoers, and the like, this is a defeat for centrism that should be mourned.
