I have reached an age where all the people in my cohort--all the friends that I've grown up with--have had kids by now.

Except me.

In recent years I've heard my best female friends tell me about the lovely scent of a baby's pate, the cute cooings of a child's voice, and how their ovaries just react to these infantine stimuli, as though it were a natural fact.

Which it is.

So why don't I feel this way as well?

Once upon a time there was a vast swath of land that, aside from the Natives and other beings that lived in it, could be had for the taking.

This was the philosophy of those who had come to the Americas from Europe, and implemented Manifest Destiny, a philosophy which colonized what we now call the United States, on the backs of a hundred different indigenous tribes, and millions of people from Africa, brought here against their will.

The sort of thing which built up our country in the name of Manifest Destiny is no more; partly because we devised machines to replace the laborers/slaves, but also because we more or less have colonized every last bit of earth this continent had to offer.

Yet we continue to hold onto that Manifest Destiny dream: that dream of the cowboy, wrangling his lariat; the dream of never-ending resources and the constant reaching for new ones. The legacy of capitalism, which is, and always had been, built on an unending stream of capital, and cruel human labor.

If you are a newbie on here, I bet you are wondering why people get so freaked about about the pootie diaries, pro or con. I already discussed why the pootie diaries matter, in an earlier entry.

Well, he's my two cents on the matter.

I, like you, have wondered why people here have violent feelings about the pootie diaries: there are those who will fight (and HR mean comments) to the end, versus those who feel they have to make a mean comment about pooties every single time a pootie diary is posted, and get HR'd to the nines.

In the beginning, I hated the pootie diaries. But now? Well, I welcome them, now.

Why is this?

Every time I find myself reacting strongly to a thing, I always stop and wonder why I feel so strongly about it; and I have come to the realization that whenever I feel such a way, it has more to do with me, than the topic at large.

I was always, from my earliest days, what you would call an "underachiever": never really applied myself at school, never really applied myself much to the type of the things that society in general considered important; simply because, I thought, that it wasn't worth it.

However, after some years I realized that the reason why I didn't apply myself to such things was because I didn't think I had the wherewithal to achieve it; and somewhere down the line, I understood that if you don't aim high, then you never achieve anything.

Let me begin by saying that when I first joined the DKos I did not at all understand the whole cat diary thing. In fact in incensed me, enough to diary about it (if you care to go back in my diary history and check it out--I won't provide the link to it). And it still is an obsession for me of sorts, clearly, since I'm choosing to diary about it again. I won't stop to consider just why at the moment.

And yet, over my short tenure here, I've come to realize just what these pootie diaries are supposed to be about, and it makes me think about the particular culture that arises in any place, whether it's in the office break room, in a classroom, at a family gathering, or at a blog site.

For many years, I was utterly disengaged from politics--I read nothing in the news, I knew nothing, I didn't want to know nothing. Because I'd come to the conclusion that the news couldn't really tell me the truth, and the truth that could be had (for instance, at Democracy Now), was so hopeless and depressing that it wasn't even worth perusing, because in the end, what could someone such as me do about it?

Pooties and R-word and other DK horrid things, oh my!

So I just want to talk about some of my observations that I've acquired ever since I joined the DK back in October or whenever it was (check my UID, wowsers that figure could maybe pay off the National Debt! LOL)

At any rate, allow me to spew some rather random and useless observations on the State of Daily Kos as it stands, which I will be the first to admit probably doesn't have a lot of substance. But, considering the topics which I'm about to discuss, should be a moot point, really.

I've been reading a lot of diaries here about how the "black vote" failed the gays by voting Yes on Proposition 8. Some of the diarists have been up in arms about it, and have vowed not to vote for "black interests" again because of it. And this does trouble me.

This particular ballot measure had been as of equal importance to me as getting Obama elected. It's hard for me to articulate why, except that I have always believed in equal rights for all, and that there are several people whom I love dearly who would be (and now are) gravely affected by the passage of Proposition 8. Its passage tells me that perhaps I assume too much about people in California: I assume that most people in this state, like me, know that they have friends and loved ones who are gay, and to whom "gay" or bisexual is not a big deal at all, just another version of love which isn't all that different from any sort of love any of us who are not gay experience, since I guess most of us tend to fall in love with human beings, right?

Well, maybe I might be wrong about assuming that people in California feel the way I do. And what it tells me is that what's needed now is outreach, and connection.

There have been a couple diaries here in the last few days thanking Kos and other people on this site who have made a difference. I'd just like to take the time to extend my own thanks to all of you here, because this site has really helped keep me sane over the last couple weeks.

I'm one of the nail-biting Chicken Littles that people sometimes bemoan. My anxiety about this election has kept me awake at nights, wondering what I am going to do if Obama doesn't win. But you guys at Daily Kos have really helped a lot, because I see the intelligence, the decency, the drive, and the kindness that so many of you show in your diaries and comments, so there are times that I think With folks such as these supporting Obama, how could he lose?

But perhaps the most striking thing for me about being here, and about this election in general, is that it has shown me that maybe there really are two Americas. However, the dividing line between them is not at all what people like Palin or Bachmann say it is. It has nothing to do with religion, or race, or sexual preference, or income, or education.
