If Joe Biden wants to pass the torch to the next generation of Democratic leaders, he can do so by August 7 - 40 days from now.
If Biden passes the torch, I believe a ticket of Kamala Harris and Gretchen Whitmer would beat Donald Trump in November - and help elect Democrats everywhere.
Because the top issue in this election is reproductive freedom - which is even bigger than abortion.
Reproductive freedom starts with abortion, where the stakes are now clear. In Republican-run states, every woman who gets pregnant is now risking her life if something tragically goes wrong.
And if a woman goes to a hospital bleeding out, Republican governors, judges, legislators, and activists have proven they couldn’t care less.
75% of Americans oppose these life-threatening Republican abortion bans - not just women but all the men who love them.
But that’s just the start. What about families who can’t get pregnant?
Anti-abortion activists want to ban IVF because they consider the destruction of extra embryos to be the murder of a fully-born child.
That has long been the position of the Catholic Church, whose political power has waned. But they were recently joined by the Southern Baptist Convention and the Republican Parties of North Carolina and Idaho, despite the urgent pleas of conservatives who themselves used IVF to have children.
90% of Americans oppose Republican IVF bans - not just women but everyone who wants children.
And what about couples who want to prevent a pregnancy altogether? Republicans want to ban IUDs and the morning-after pill because they wrongly believe they abort pregnancies.
(Pregnancy starts with implantation in the uterus, which occurs 10-15 days after sex. Both the IUD and the morning-after pill prevent implantation from beginning.)
95% of Americans oppose Republican birth control bans - not just women but everyone who has sex.
Trump’s Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and the constitutional right to reproductive freedom that was guaranteed for 49 years.
Trump’s Republican Party then declared war on abortion, IVF, and birth control - threatening the lives and most personal decisions of women and their families.
Kamala Harris and Gretchen Whitmer would hold Republicans fully accountable for this disaster where it counts - in the ballot box.
Harris and Whitmer are proven winners. When Harris ran for the Senate, she won over 7.5 million votes - 3 million more than much-touted Ron DeSantis. As Vice President, Harris helped Joe Biden win a record 81 million votes - 7 million more than Donald Trump, who still refuses to concede defeat.
As for Whitmer, she won re-election by an impressive 470,000 votes in a state Biden won by only 154,000. And Whitmer’s coattails were equally impressive - she helped elect prochoice Democratic women to Attorney General, Secretary of State, and the state legislature.
Of course, we’ve never had an all-female ticket. But until 1920, women couldn’t even vote. Now women cast the majority of votes - and pro-choice women pick the winners in every close race.
And of course, Donald Trump and his Republican allies would attack an all-woman ticket. But Harris and Whitmer are more than tough enough to take it - and hit back as hard as it takes.
And they won’t have to fight alone. America’s solid pro-choice majority - women, men, and non-binary - will support them every step of the way with money, organizing, and votes.
So here’s my advice to President Biden: go ahead and pass the torch to Kamala Harris and Gretchen Whitmer. Then sit back and watch them create a Blue Wave big enough to defeat Donald Trump and elect Democrats everywhere.
Yes. She. Can.
