I'm not one for conspiracy theories. Frankly, I don't think the government could conspire its way out of the Capitol South Metro stop at rush hour.

The thing is conspiracy theories come in three sizes. There is the "you have to be off your rocker" theory. Think birthers, truthers and people who watched too much of The X Files. There are also the historical conspiracy theories. These conspiracy theories revolve around something that happened a long time ago and no one cares if you buy into alternate histories. Think Kennedy's assassination and people who still think Elvis is alive.

Then there are the conspiracies that are so brazen that the best place to hide them is out in the open. Take the firing of all of those attorneys general in 2006. Talking Points Memo uncovered the story that was essentially out in the open for everyone to see. All you had to do was take off the blindfold and realize that you were touching an elephant, so to speak.

The latest round of union busting might have a deeper significance than just political maneuvering. Here's some dots to connect.

Happy President's Day. Some of you have a day off and you are not quite sure why. I know why I have the day off -- 9 percent unemployment. On a personal note, things are looking up for me. But that's not today's point.

This is a subjective list of the ten most influential presidents in US history. To be clear, a president doesn't have to be a good person to be influential. Indeed, some presidents on this list will make the liberal blood boil. So be it. A measure of influence is how much we feel the effects of the administration.

Welcome to the future.

For the past week, the citizens of Egypt have been protesting and calling for their "president" of 30 years to step down. And yes, there is a lot more to the story.

But there is a bigger story here. Consider this: What have you really learned about the protests in Egypt (and Tunisia, Algeria, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Jordan and Lebanon) from the US media?

Let's consider that.

Update II I knew I could count on this community to give me a good pep talk. I sincerely appreciate all of the words of support. Now I have to get to bed and try harder tomorrow.

I just had a ROTFLMFAO moment and I needed to share.

You see, on occasion, I like to get my shots, don my HAZMAT suit, and wade into the toxic muck of the far right of the blogosphere. Those views are particularly illuminating on days like this when the left actually wins on a policy debate. It reminds me why I rejected right-wing thinking a long time ago and never looked back.

Aside: I argue that we were actually .500 today after losing on the DREAM Act. It is a really low person who would argue against a long, expensive and grueling path to citizenship for undocumented folks brought here as kids. But I digress for the moment.

So what did I find when I went to our frienemies' site, Free Republic?

It seems our president has a knack for giving something to everyone while pissing off everyone in the process. I don't think President Obama had wrapped up his speech this afternoon before the left was calling for a primary challenge and the right was saying, "oh, hell no."

And from the political middle, where most Americans reside? Crickets as usual. (At least until the next Pew poll comes out in a few days and shows they are definately "meh" on the whole thing.)

Let's cool the vitriol for a minute and consider the politics behind all of this.

Right Wing Nut Job Bill O'Reilly, who lost his head Head Pinhead in Charge status to the even nuttier Glenn Beck lately, seems to have dropped his whole "War on Christmas" line.

Damn. I could have used a good hook for this diary. This snark from Salon will need to suffice.

What follows is a rant about Xmas, in contrast to the more traditional Christmas. The two are not interchangeable, nor are they mutually exclusive. "Christmas" is that Dec. 25 holiday where most of us take the day off to spend time with family, maybe exchange a few tokens of appreciation and Christians observe a high holy day.

Xmas is a much, much, much uglier thing.

Confession time: Before I started this diary, I put an hour into yet another screed filled with hand-wringing, navel gazing and blame placing. It was a righteous rant blaming everyone and anyone for a terrible night.

Then I deleted it. It didn't help.

There's enough of that filling the internets (including the rec list), teevee machines and the dead tree versions of the Internet.

We can't reverse the shellacking we took yesterday, but there are some lessons to learn, especially if the race for 2012 starts today.
