Who is the Iraqi resistance? As reported last year in the Washington Post considerable efforts have been made to convince the American people that they are closely tied to Al Qaeda or at the very least Islamic fundamentalists. The truth is a lot more complicated. The various resistance groups range in politics from Islamists to Baathists to various stripes of nationalists to communists and other leftists.

This complexity almost never makes it into the corporate media that shapes the thinking even of progressive activists. I recently came a cross a couple videos from an Iraqi resistance group that I think every American should see to get a better appreciation of who exactly "our troops" are fighting.

The movement to impeach Bush and Cheney for war crimes is gaining steam. One piece of this is the "Bush Is Over! ... If You Want It!" campaign based on John Lennon and Yoko Ono's "War Is Over" campaign. The Bush is Over campaign is looking to put up billboards and posters promoting the simple message that we can be rid of Bush if we really want it. They also have a great slide show of folks holding Bush is Over and similar signs that riffs off the "We Tried" slideshow that went up after Bush's re-election. The important difference is that this time instead of apologizing for our failure to oust Bush, everybody is declaring their determination to drive him out. So check out the Bush Is Over slideshow. The New York Times is reporting that

In a coordinated assault on an American combat outpost north of Baghdad, suicide bombers drove three cars laden with explosives into the base, killing two American soldiers and wounding at least 17 more, according to witnesses and the American military.

The revelations concerning Cheney's involvement in the Plame leak create a situation in which the possibilitities for forcing Bush from office may be greatly improved.

One of the biggest obstacle to moving effectively to impeach Bush or force his resignation has been the prospect of a President Cheney.

While there is no shortage of grounds on which to impeach Cheney, the recent revelations in the Plame affair provide an opportunity for folks to start demanding his resignation.

This sets the stage for the replacement of Cheney. Section 2 of the 25th Amendment to the Constitution reads:

Section 2

Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress.

Following his recent re-election, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has announced his intentions to continue down the path to socialism by nationalizing Venezuela's electrical and telecommunications industries, according to CNN.

What fuels the continuing Israeli-Palestinian conflict? All too often we are told that this conflict is rooted in ancient hatreds that are as impossible to uproot as they are to understand for those not directly involved. In truth, the cause is of much more recent vintage and not at all difficult to understand. the cause of the conflict is the ongoing Israeli colonization of Palestinian lands.
CBS New is reporting that:

Israel has approved a new settlement in the West Bank to house former Jewish settlers from the Gaza Strip, officials said Tuesday, breaking a promise to the U.S. to halt home construction in the Palestinian territories.

Construction in the northern West Bank town of Maskiot began months ago, but the project only received final approval from the Defense Ministry last week, said Dubi Tal, head of the Jordan Valley regional council.

I just read the article in the Lancet that reports an estimated 655,000 excess deaths as a result of the invasion of Iraq. The article is only 8 pages and most of it should be understandable to an educated layperson.

Of the 655,000 excess deaths, 601,000 are the direct result of violence with the rest being caused indirectly as a result of things like disruptions in delivery of nutrition and healthcare.

As the mid-term elections approach, many here at Daily Kos will be working hard for various candidates. But the recent votes by too many Democrats in favor of the Bush Torture Bill makes it clear that it is also criucial that we build a movement in the streets that isn't trapped in the perverse logic of electoral expediency, a movement that can speak clearly and forthrightly about the real threats we are facing. The silence of most Democratic Party congressional candidates on the urgent need to get out of Iraq, in spite of mass popular support for withdrawal, strongly indicates the need for more than electoral politics as usual.

Tomorrow, Thurs., October 5 will be a nation-wide day of Mass Resistance to the Bush regime's agenda of war and torture.

There is a very simple way for the Dems to take maximum advantage of the recent revelations of a Republican cover-up to protect a sexual predator.

Every single Democratic candidate for a House or Senate seat should hold a local press conference next week demanding that their Republican opponent join them in demanding the immediate resignation of Denny Hastert and whatever other Repub leadership is implicated in the cover-up.

This puts every single Republican candidate under the spotlight to see if they will "protect the protectors of sexual predators." Its a win-win situation. Either they join in the call for Hastert et al's heads or they have to explain why they won't or they try to evade the question. In every case there is an opportunity to turn this to advantage. Every Republican who does join the call should be used as a stick to beat the others with. And refusals and evasions should be seized on to keep the story alive. Read More

What can't be overlooked, what the Times and the military are not overlooking so much as leaving unsaid, is the city where this little featurish lap-dance is taking place. Haditha is the location of the revenge-massacre by the Marines last year of 24 Iraqi civilians.
