I was a soldier for most of the time between 1970 and 1996. I signed out on my retirement from 3rd Special Forces in Ft. Bragg. I had also served in 7th Special Forces, on three Ranger assignments, with Delta for almost four years, as a Cavalry Scout for a while, and in the 82nd Airborne Division as an infantryman. I started my career in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Brigade.
I thugged around in eight different places in East Asia, Latin America, and Africa, where I pointed guns at people. Like you, I was an instrument of American foreign policies policies controlled, then as now, by the rich.

When the people lead, the leaders will follow.

Well, its pretty clear from the diaries and from personal conversations that the Bush regime has crossed some sort of line with people. The real question is what are people going to do about it?

All the standard suggestions have been trotted out: Call and write your congreecritters in spite of their repeated imperviousness to the gravity of the situation. Boycott or change your telephone company. work even harder to elect Dems to Congress in November. Etc...

All of these are fine things to do. But their fundamental inadequacy should be apparent by now. The people that folks are looking to to lead us have some other things on their minds.

There is something more than a little sad about all this excitement over the monologue of a comedian on the eve of possibly the largest political general strike in U.S. history. Don't get me wrong. I enjoy watching Stephen Colbert speak truthiness to power as much as the next guy, but there is a disturbing impotence in the enormous weight that is being placed on one man making some pointed jokes about the president on C-SPAN. Comments to the effect that maybe finally the media will wake up to the real nature of the crimes of the Bush administration now that Colbert has dared to puncture Bush's balloon reflect the outlook of a populace so completely domesticated that it can only imagine political struggle as something conducted by celebrity proxies.

By contrast, the immigrant community is demonstrating concretely the REAL POWER that working people have to force this system to deal with their demands. Read More

I've been surprised by the lack of diaries about what has been happening in Nepal. Its gotten some coverage in the corporate media, but the analyses are often so skewed that it is impossible to get an accurate picture of what is happening.

The single best source of information I've found is: http://www.insn.org/ operated by the International Nepal Solidarity Network. Banned in Nepal (always a good sign) it carries news from a wide variety of sources along with often passionate comments by readers of similarly varied outlooks.

There have been a number of diaries and comments lamenting the failure of the Dems to put forward a plann or program for action to counter the Republicans in the mid-term elections. Such a program is not difficult to imagine. But we can safely bet that the Dems won't do it. Many folks here at DailyKos have opposed amnesty for America's 11 plus million undocumented workers on the specious grounds that it will be bad for poor and working class Americans. The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) disagrees. They are the largest labor union in the U.S. and they organize among the poorest sectyors of workers. And they understand quite clearly that illegal staus and anti-immigrant laws are a major obstacle in the fight for justice for ALL workers.

10,000 marched in Phoenix.
500,000 marched in Los Angeles.

It is a storm that seemed to come out of nowhere.

The House has passed and the Senate is considering legislation that would transform over 10 million people, and anybody who assists them, into felons overnight.

While some here at DKos debate how this issue will effect the electoral chances of the Dems, there is more fundamental question here, of whether we are going to be on the right side of history.
