Is DailyKos still a good place for newbies?

I have a friend who has been writing letters to elected officials for years and is getting frustrated that her letters aren’t having any effect. She doesn’t spend much time on the internet. Yesterday we talked and she asked what would be a good place for her to post her thoughts — a blog, a podcast, or something else. DailyKos was the first place I thought of, because it used to be that kind of a place, accepting of newbies, welcoming, and forgiving. I haven’t spent much time here in a lot of years — is it still that kind of space? Thanks for any guidance.

Maybe Senate Dems should abstain on Gorsuch

I think it’s pretty clear that whatever Senate Dems do, Gorsuch will be confirmed. His appointment will be clouded by Republicans’ unprecedented obstruction of Obama’s nominee. Unanimous abstention on the part of Senate Democrats would, I think, point out the historic attack on the checks and balances of our democracy in ways that simple No votes would not.

Such an act would say: we know what you’re doing. We can’t do anything about it. You have broken our centuries-old traditions and systems, and we mark it by sitting this one out.

Our little health care group is switching modes. During the national health care debate, we got together every weekend to hold up health care signs on the corner, handing out pamphlets, getting yelled at a little and yelling back.

The health care debate isn't over, but the window of effectiveness for that kind of approach probably is - if it wasn't already. So we're going to start writing letters to editors, to try to inform and persuade the public about this complex issue. Specifically, we're promoting the concept of Single Payer health care in California.

The judge in the electronic signature case has issued a tentative ruling, that digital signatures will not be permitted to help bring initiatives to the ballot.

"The digital image of a purportedly completed initiative petition stored on a USB flash drive does not constitute a petition or paper for purposes of determining what the elections office must process," Miram wrote in his tentative ruling.

This is bad news for the Restore Equality 2010 campaign; without digital signatures, it's hard to see how we could collect enough signatures to get it onto the ballot.

Today I got arrested, with my friends Mary and Jerry. This was part of a national campaign, organized by Mobilize For Healthcare For All, to sit in on health insurance offices, get arrested and raise the profile of health care reform and, more specifically, Single Payer.

This is my first arrest; here's what happened.

Dear President Obama,

The past few nights my girlfriend and I watched the PBS documentary about LBJ. We were hoping to find some examples for you of how he had bullied, bribed, blackmailed, and browbeaten fellow Democrats into voting for elements of his Great Society legislation - because, as you know, he did those things, and because we feel you need to be following his example, particularly with respect to health care reform, which seems headed for disappointment - either a weak bill, a gift to corporate interests, or, more likely, no bill at all. But I digress.

We saw parallels between LBJ's presidency and your own as we watched the documentary, but they were not the parallels we anticipated. The strongest analogy between the presidency of LBJ and yours, thus far, I fear, is the one we must draw between Vietnam and Afghanistan.

Yesterday OFA held a healthcare rally here in San Diego, and Maggie & I attended with the handmade signs we take to every such rally (they've gotten a lot of use lately, between our regular Saturday rallies, Congresswoman Davis' four town halls, and a MoveOn vigil the night before). Only one deeply offensive wingnut was present, and there were on the order of 150 of us. Downtown, on Broadway, in front of Horton Plaza. Mostly honks and waves of support from passers-by, with a few nasties in the crowd to keep it interesting.

As the rally was winding down, another "anti" showed up - this one not quite so wingnutty, but bearing handouts with the scary healthcare flowchart that alleges to explain HR3200. At first I wrote her off as a kook and not worth my time, but she persisted, and I engaged - and maybe a little good came of it. Follow me below the fold for more.

Yesterday Mike Copass and incumbent Susan Davis participated in a debate hosted by Common Cause and the League of Women Voters. They are candidates for the Congressional seat in the 53rd district of California, my district. The hour-long event at the Joyce Beers Center was very well attended - standing room only - and it was a great debate.

I didn't take notes - and I should have - but below the fold are the points I can remember.
