Presuming that the memos on Bush's service in TANG may be forged and considering that we now know the administration sold the war in Iraq partly based on forged documents which is worse? Knowingly using forged documents to mislead the country into thinking Iraq was a threat due to a nuclear weapons program when it was not or the unknowing use of forged documents by the news media in order to confirm a story that is, in fact true?

If we are going to talk about forged documents lets talk about ones that matter.

The meme is W = wrong but it is more accurate to say W = FUBAR. Here is the story.

The U.S. budget deficit will balloon to $2.29 trillion over the next decade, congressional analysts said on Tuesday, a worse outlook than previously forecast and one likely to stir election-year debate about President Bush (news - web sites)'s economic policies.
The forecast from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (news - web sites) compares to the outlook for a $2.01 trillion deficit for 2005-2014 it provided in March under current economic policies.

The CBO also confirmed a preliminary forecast it put out in August showing an expected record deficit of $422 billion for the 2004 fiscal year.
That compares to the White House's latest deficit forecast of $445 billion for this year. The White House no longer provides a 10-year deficit forecast.

Kerry needs to take on the role of Prosecutor facing the jury and convict Bush to no more years in the White House. The case is straightforward and rests on five pillars:

The economy. The President promised 5 million new jobs and delivered negative 1 million. The situation is a disaster.
The deficit. The President promised to balance budgets but instead has dangerously grown the deficit and his administration (Cheney) says deficits don't matter. The situation is a disaster.
The war on terrorism. The President ignored warnings and did not protect the country from 9-11. Then he waged the wrong war at the wrong time in the wrong way. The situation is now catastrophic.
Healthcare. The President promised to address healthcare but has done nothing but raise premiums on the elderly and protect profits for drug companies. The situation is catastrophic.
Civil liberties. The President has undertaken a fundamental attack on civil liberties through implementation of the Patriot Act and has disgraced the nation in the eyes of the world with Abu Ghraib. Kerry should say that 31 years ago he saw the same garbage from a Republican administration that prosecuted lower level soldiers. The situation is a disaster.

David Brooks feeds the public yet another NY Times like fantasy about BushCo. His basic argument is that if Bush is reelected he is going to usher in a new world of big government, compassionate conservatism. Trouble is we heard exactly the same kind of BS from Brooks and Friedman and the other Bush apologists about the Iraq war. Bush was going bring democracy to Iraq and the middle east, yada, yada, yada. The willful ignorance about Bush is evidenced yet again in Brooks editorial. Brooks knows it too because he says

It should be said that I do have a voice in my head that says this is all a mirage - that all the reform ideas will be tossed aside for the sake of favors for the K Street crowd. But one can sense a tide in the affairs of government.

Time to wake up Dems--they hate US.

This has been building for a long time but what became crystal clear last night at the RNC was that the base of the GOP HATES us. Not just the leaders we elect but us, all of us. They hate those of us who do not share their Manichean view of the world as being composed of good conservatives and the EVIL rest.

A visit to John O'Neill's Swift Boat website makes clear that the source of O'Neill's bitterness and many of the other Vets is that they believe Kerry has falsely accused them of war crimes and atrocities. The website makes available a transcript for a debate that took place between Kerry and O'Neill on the Dick Cavett show in 1971. The transcript shows that O'Neill has consistently misrepresented the specific charges Kerry made about his own service and therefore the Swift Boat crews. One of the attacks currently being leveled against Kerry is that he lied about being in Cambodia. O'Neill claims that Kerry is lying and that his boat was stationed nowhere near Cambodia. I think there is good evidence in support of Kerry's claim from his own contemporaneous journal.

Here is a portion of John Kerry's contemporaneous journal transcribed back in 2003 in the Boston Globe that refers directly to the action of Christmas 1968. I reprint a significant section because there is a good deal of information there that can be cross checked. The journal also reinforces just how underhanded the whole Swift Vote Vet attack on Kerry really is.

Kevin Drum of Washington Monthly gets Fahrenheit 9-11 wrong. He says

Take the first half hour of the film, in which Moore exposes the close relationship between the Bush family and the House of Saud. Sure, it relies mostly on innuendo and imagery, but then again, he never really makes the case anyway. He never flat out says that the Bush family is on the Saudi payroll. Rather, he simply includes "9/11," "Bush," and "Saudi Arabia" in as many sentences as possible, thus leaving the distinct impression that George Bush is a bought and paid for subsidiary of the Saudi royal family.

History of Gay Marriage in the Church
Conservatives like to argue that gay marriage will mean the end of two thousand years of tradition. Turns out there are historical records indictating the gay marriages were performed within the Catholic and Orthodox traditions.

Boswell's book, The Marriage of Likeness: Same Sex Unions in Pre- Modern Europe, lists in detail some same sex union ceremonies found in ancient church liturgical documents. One Greek 13th century "Order for Solemnisation of Same Sex Union" having invoked St Serge and St Bacchus, called on God to "vouchsafe unto these thy servants [N and N] grace to love one another and to abide unhated and not a cause of scandal all the days of their lives, with the help of the Holy Mother of God and all thy saints." The ceremony concludes: "And they shall kiss the Holy Gospel and each other, and it shall be concluded."

Sydney Schanberg alleges that

Senator John Kerry, a decorated battle veteran, was courageous as a navy lieutenant in the Vietnam War. But he was not so courageous more than two decades later, when he covered up voluminous evidence that a significant number of live American prisoners--perhaps hundreds--were never acknowledged or returned after the war-ending treaty was signed in January 1973.
The Massachusetts senator, now seeking the presidency, carried out this subterfuge a little over a decade ago-- shredding documents, suppressing testimony, and sanitizing the committee's final report--when he was chairman of the Senate Select Committee on P.O.W./ M.I.A. Affairs.

I have seen this one piece of viral conservative spam appear in emails and on message boards so I thought I would take a shot at an antidote. The particular meme is in the form a father/daughter talk in which the conservative father convinces the liberal daughter that Republicans are for fairness while Democrats are not. At the end of the "talk" the father welcomes the daughter to the Republican party. Here is the start of a version I have seen recently.

A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age she considered herself to be a very liberal Democrat and was for distribution of all wealth. She felt deeply ashamed that her Father was a rather staunch Republican, which she expressed openly.
One day she was challenging her father on his beliefs and his opposition to higher taxes on the rich & more welfare programs. In the middle of her heart felt diatribe, based upon the lectures she had from her far left professors at her school, he stopped her and asked her point blank, how she was doing in school.

We are getting ready to observe the Republican's unleashing of $100+ millions in campaign ads attacking Kerry (or Edwards) on his record. One thing we can be certain of is that the RNC will make a case against Kerry in the same way the Bush administration made the case against Iraq...by cherry picking information, by listening to unreliable sources and by simply lying. You just cannot trust what the administration and the Republicans tell you. I think Kerry should have a standard comeback to Republican attacks: "next thing you know they will be accusing me of having weapons of mass destruction. Well we now know that you can't trust this administration to tell the truth." Read More
