There's a fundamental shortsightedness with using "UNemployment" as a metric of the state of our economy. And that's because the nature of "employment" itself has so radically changed in the U.S. over the past few decades.

What we should rather be focusing on is "UNDERemployment", which of course includes "UNemployment"

It's not rocket science why the economy is collapsing, so it's easy for anyone to see why things won't be getting any better for years, if not decades to come, if ever.

We're in this mode of blaming short term issues, dominated by partisan views, for the current economic problems. But that's completely missing the point and won't get us anywhere.

So unless people take the blinders off and stop blaming, and looking short term, then nothing will get done.

Here it is in simple terms that anyone should be able to understand.

In a nut shell: Good paying jobs for the masses. We used to have them, now we don't.

The economic collapse in the U.S. - which we are only just beginning to see the signs of - are, I believe, largely the result of over 15 years of traitorous trade policies that were enacted but for one purpose: to reduce/eliminate tariffs so that big U.S. based manufacturers could move their operations off shore in order to make higher profits.

But at what cost to our country over the long term?

Last week I posed a diary challenging the recent meme that the high price of oil had "nothing to do with supply vs. demand" (Senator Dorgan on the Ed Schultz show last week) and that instead it's all those evil wall street speculators that were to blame.

Several commenters took issue with some of my points.

A day or two later, Senator Dorgan appeared once again on Ed's show to then proclaim (flip-flop) that his bill to compel the President to stop diverting "supply" into the national strategic oil reserves, would help pressure prices downward - due to do this small, but apparently now significant change in supply.

You can't have it both ways, Mr. Dorgan!

Okay...the other day on Ed Schultz I heard this (supposedly) intelligent senator (Dorgan?) say that 'the price of oil has nothing to do with supply and demand' and went on to talk about "speculators" in the market being to blame for everything!!!

Such blinding ignorance from one of our elected leaders in congress...

...or could it be propaganda instead by one of the water-carriers for big oil interests?

Okay...so it's discovered that one of the largest remaining untapped resources, of the most lucrative commodities on the planet, lies beneath an area on earth which is landlocked by surrounding countries who don't like you.

But in order to get that commodity out to market - so that you can profit from harvesting it - you need a major highway or two to the nearest seaport where you can load it on big boats and ship it off to world markets.

Problem is: those aforementioned surrounding countries. Those highways will have to traverse their land and they're not going to just let you do it.

What's a Western capitalist to do!
