The Tragedy in Tucson has caught the attention of our leaders in Congress. It has suddenly occurred to them that they are vulnerable to random acts of violence by gun wielding maniacs.

But...

The power of the NRA is so profound that this gun manufacturer's mouth piece can gin up voter back lash against any attempt to enact sensible restrictions on gun ownership.

Well, I have a plan.

That word is being thrown around a lot, today. How can we possibly comprehend the acts of an individual who thinks that his judgment, his actions, his glossy crazy, are to replace the results of an election?

Kinda' lets us all off easy, doesn't it?

It certainly doesn't require that the media examine its part in fanning the flames of irrationality. It lets anyone with a strident voice, and a keyboard, off the hook. It eliminates any need for a further examination of the political and social climate that makes hate, and violence, and using any lie to make a point, unnecessary.

After all, if it is incomprehensible, then we just can't comprehend the dynamics, and we might as well not bother our pretty little heads trying.

They were Black. They were young. And, they received Mississippi justice. A life sentence for an $11 dollar robbery.

For 16 years, sisters Jamie and Gladys Scott have shared a life behind bars for their part in an $11 armed robbery. To share freedom, they must also share a kidney.

But Presidential hopeful, Haley Barbour, fresh off his defense of racist organizations and a complete denial of the racial dynamics of his home town, has a solution.

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour suspended the sisters' life sentences on Wednesday, but 36-year-old Gladys Scott's release is contingent on her giving a kidney to Jamie, her 38-year-old sister, who requires daily dialysis.

Back in the late 1960's, Dr. Robert Summers began an exploration into the impact that the environmental decisions that surround us have upon the social dynamics we experience. In an entirely new way of looking at the world, he blended psychology, architecture, and crowd behavior into a new science.

One of his many efforts was driven by a curiosity as to why people in the local airport, waiting for a flight, didn't talk to one another, even when they were clearly part of a family, or social group. He spent hours mapping verbal exchanges, movements of people, and activities before he began to look at the environment itself.

As some of you know, I was diagnosed with an aggressive bladder cancer this past summer. I had no symptoms and was thus taken completely by surprise. What is more, the biopsy showed stage 3 development and a CAT Scan suggested the possibility of some metastasis. I entered a very rigorous schedule of chemotherapy which I began to think might well kill me before the cancer had a chance to complete its mission! I have been very ill, and miserable for the past 6 months.

Imagine then, my disbelief when I was given the result of a new CAT Scan, performed last week.

I have searched, unsuccessfully, for the video clip shown shortly before 8am this morning on "Your Business" on MSNBC. The weekend program is broadcast during the early morning hours, here on the east coast. The exact time when small children rise early and parents, still trying to grab a few extra minutes of sleep, wave vaguely in the direction of the TV.

The routine well established, the kids park them selves in front of the monster and turn it on.

This morning they had an extra special treat.

I am in my 70's, and as all children of Depression Era parents, I was expected to "learn about work" at an early age. I got my first job as an inventory clerk at the Lerner's store in Los Angeles at 14, by lying about my age. (I looked and acted a bit more mature than my contemporaries.) My salary was .65 cents (that's sixty-five cents) per hour. From that Social Security, taxes and Workman's Comp were deducted. My first pay check was $22 for two weeks work. I was so very proud!

My next jobs were as a waitress, where I worked for tips only. I paid my taxes and reported my earning. I got by, but just barely.

Keith Olberman just reported that the Obama Administration intervened with the Spanish government to block the indictment of 6 former Bush officials on charges of setting the legal framework for torture, against international law and covenants.

They are now trying to intervene with the Nigerian government to prevent the indictment of Dick Cheney, as former head of KBR, on bribery charges, which have already been admitted to. Interpol has a red list on Cheney, making him subject to arrest if he leaves the US, but our government, which has had an extradition treaty with Nigeria since 1931, wants to block extradition of an admitted criminal.

During my latest recovery from my last bout with Killer Khemo, I have spent a great deal of time watching C-SPAN. And, I have spent a great deal of time trying to understand where the various callers and guests get their opinions.

I have also spent many years tracking the effects of the late 1970's educational revolution that focused on building self-esteem as one of the primary jobs of teachers and educators. (A revolution which I fought vigorously at the time, and continue to oppose today.)

I think we are seeing the fruits of this intersection, writ large.

"Everyone is entitled to their own opinion" has become the dominant mantra of civic life, and no one stops to question the wisdom of this notion that opinion is a replacement for knowledge.

The financial press seems determined to serve their corporate masters by insisting that there will be no job creation until the Federal Government eliminates "uncertainty". That's the buzz word. Repeated multiple times in every interview with pundits, CEO's, market mavens, and the herd of press that slavishly repeat what they are told.

UNCERTAINTY??? Isn't that what business is all about?

If these bozos are so determined to crouch in fear over the possibility that their millions and billions, acquired through daredevil risk taking that nearly brought down the world, is so heavily at risk by a 4% increase in taxes, they may well be as incompetent and stupid as we all suspect.

They had me at "Imagine".

But the contrasts were so breathtaking as to be stunning.

No one claimed a divine mandate. No one spoke of fear and loathing. No one claimed that they, and they alone, had all of the answers to the horrors of complexity that confront us as the world spins away with blinding speed.

It was just a marvelous stew of people, all colors, all ages, meeting in joyous celebration.
