I REALLY hate Dennis Hastert

I wasn't able to be apart of anything while the sun was up today, but on my trip into Manhattan my express bus's noraml route down 5th Ave was shifted over to Lexington. It turns out that Dennis Hastert was holding a party/fundraiser/event-of-some-sort at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

I know this should come as no surprise, but Hastert's hypocracy was in full force with this event. Compare and decide for yourself:

This is a bit gratutious as there is another diary sort of on the same subject, but I thought I should put up a new since this is kind of a "story". And to add to the gratutity a little, this was orginally post about six hours ago at the Yankee Rag

According to a source inside the city government, emergency renovations are being conducted on the Brooklyn House of Detention which are to be completed in two weeks, just in time for the Republicans to arrive. In my dreams this would be to make for all of the Republicans who should be in jail, but it's pretty obvious that this is for the protesters. The Brooklyn Detention House was operational up until last year when it was closed for budgetary reasons. It has a full capacity of 815, according to the NY Correction History Society. Read More

The Times might not be able to be as hard-hitting as I would like on matters in DC, but they get pretty close when it comes to Albany. I'm not going to get my hopes up high yet though since this bill has only been introduced, not passed and signed by Pataki. Read More

I'll admit it, I'm in love. I know there are sides like his early endorsement of John Kerry and such, but dammit I love Eliot and surprisingly the Washington Post seems to be right there with me (I say "surprisingly" mostly because of the Post's god-awful hawkish Editorial Board).

But, The linked Post piece reads more like a narative released by Spitzer '06 then anything. While it does give Grasso and others Spitzer has aimed for their say, albeit a bit briefly, paragraphs like these make me wonder if the writer isn't afflicted with the same adoration as myself:

He'll quote Homer Simpson and Daniel Patrick Moynihan minutes apart in the same speech. His Manhattan office is filled with photographs. It's Frank Barbaro Day over at The Nor'Easter today. Barbaro is running for CD-13 in New York - Staten Island and part of Brooklyn - which is currently held be Vito Fossella. Vito is champion of all that is right wing with a 96% party line voting record. He also was the originator of the "Convention on a Cruise Ship" idea for the RNC here in NYC and now is pushing to make OTC drugs tax-deductable (hot damn, I'll be able deduct my toothpaste soon!). As of 3:45 EDT, The Nor'Easter is up and running. My apologies if any one tried to use the contact form during the past couple of days, I forgot a semi-colon in my PHP script. It's all been fixed and is ready for your enjoyment.

As, I wrote on Saturday the Nor'Easter will focus on New York State and the Tri-State area's politics in a vareity of manners. We will cover candidates, election races as well as collect and distribute information on the local Democratic Party.

In my effort to create a little pre-launch buzz I'm spending part of my Saturday night blogging instead of eating dinner (don't worry, I'm heading out right after this).

This Monday, a group of lefties from in and around New York City will be launching The Nor'Easter, a website which will concentrate on the politics of New York and the Tri-State area. The site will be more the simply a blog. It will feature sections breaking down the structure of the local Democratic Party, providing a 'Who's Who' of state politics and tracking upcoming state legislation.

The site will be rolled out over time. Rather, then wait to have all of our tools live and sections completed, so you'll be able to watch us grow and evolve and possibly contribute if you are interested. If you would like to contribute either as an author, design or on a technical level please drop us a line via our online form.

Already, we have an interview with Frank Barbaro who is running for the 13th Congressional District in New York, some great research on NY-1 (Tim Bishop's seat) and a breakdown of the party structure in New York State from the State Committee all the way down to the District Leaders and Democratic Clubs.

Of all the things that are aiming to bring down Bush, the Transportation bill is the most petty in my mind but possibly the most deadly. Like the old adage goes, "Never get between a legislator and a piece of asphault."

However it seems that Bush and the Republicans don't think that applies to New York and show their love of New York only extends to the exploitation level, not to the point of actually helping the state improve its infrastructure foundation upon which any hope of any economic revival might launch from. Yesterday the House took up its version of the transportation bill which will give New York State $15.8 billion over the next six years. The number is $1.6 billion less then what state official were hoping for and will leave NY $150 million short per year on highway projects alone. Read More

Last night the budget deadline for NYS passed for the 20th year in a row without a budget having been completed. I would say this puts NY in a class of its own regarding state budgets, but the state has been there for years already. Things are so screwed up in the process in Albany that three men with egos too huge to comprehend are holding the state hostage. Read More

So, last night I was sitting on the subway trying to pound out some PHP code in my note book thinking about other internet things I could do in the political scene. I remembered about last Tuesday's election and how Kos refered us to archpundit to Illinios results and thought there isn't really any blog I know that focuses on New York State or the Tri-States area. So, my solution: start one.

My vision would be to have a blog that focused on NY/NJ/CT issues as well as contributing to the national discusion. With over 10% of the US population in these three states, local issue can be national ones and also, this area, like California, is a test lab for the rest of the country in many respects. So, to have a blog covering the news and politics of this area I feel is very important.

However, I'd like to enlist the help of others out there with an interest in the area's politics since I don't have the time to keep up a thorough blog. I'm sure I'd draw largely on those who live here, but also people who used to live here, but have a depth of knowledge and a desire to write analysis on the happenings. If you are interested contact me via the email form on my site (I can't stand giving my email out for the parsers to get) or point me to your contact info in the comments.

Lastly, I'd need a name. So far I've been fixated on things with some mention of Knickerbocker or Yankee (knickerpundit.com, theyankeeleft.com, etc.). Please use the comments to bounce around some ideas and I'll register the domain when there is a winner. You can check availability at GoDaddy.

Long Island Trends

Lately there has been a lot made in New York State and a little nationally about the swing of Long Island from bastion of Republicanism to a new hope for the Democrats. I have been doing a lot of research on the dynamics of NY voter numbers this swing in party numbers is rather astounding. Not only has there been a steady march to the left on Long Island, but over the past four years, the swing has been very rapid.

Between the two LI counties (Nassau and Suffolk) the change has been more rapid in Nassau. My guess is because of the expansion of the influence of NYC into it's neighbor, while the old money of the Hamptons has kept Suffolks a little behind the tide.
