In those dark days after November 3, I wandered around in the depressive gloom of the world of No Hope. For sure, I thought, we had bought a one-way, non-refundable, do not pass Go ticket to hell in a handbasket.

And I live in one of the bluest states around.

And then I remembered what Molly Ivins had said on a panel (on what and where and when has slipped through the ever increasing holes in the sieve formerly known as my brain). During the Q&A, an older man pointed out that WWII was supposed to be the war that ended all wars, but from the discussion that day, it seemed that the US had failed to learn any lessons from history at all and seemed condemned to repeat its errors over and over again. Why, then, he asked, should he have hope?

There's much noise and heat and tearing out of hair over some of the, um, let us say more flamboyant styles of some dKos members. Most of it is, IMHO, much ado about nothing.

Wouldn't it be nice, though, to raise as much ruckus about the countless acts of spontaneous kindness and generosity that is enacted every single day in this village? It's not that we don't have our warm and fuzzy moments here. Surely the mojo lovefest known as Cheers and Jeers has become the paradigm for a warmer, gentler, dKos. Carnacki's Got a Happy Story series continues the theme. PastorDan not only reminds us how lucky we are, but makes a space for us to give thanks each week.

Earlier today, Maryscott made a reference to Jean-Paul in Pastordan's WYFP problem. Don't know if this was her intention, but I took it to be a reference to Sartre's play, No Exit in which he states that hell is other people.

I don't have the energy to throw a party diary tonight, but still feel the need to try and create a space where we can speak openly, from our hearts, to try and shed more light than heat. A clean, well-lighted place.

I offer you, then, a comfortable room with sofas well-worn from hours of raucous laughter and quiet tears. Softly lit by lamps, the evening outside muted by the conversation within. Here are pillows on the floor to rest your head, a coffee table to prop up your weary feet.

Plutonium Page mentioned earlier today that there are too many variables in the human condition to come to anything approaching "proof." Amen and pass the brie, please. My favorite part of the children's magazine Highlights was the page where you had to find all the things wrong in the picture. There'd be a fish in the birdbath. Or a child swinging a baseball bat at a football. Maybe Dad would be trying to mow the lawn with the vacuum cleaner.

I, like many others, have ranted and raged, gnashed my teeth over the duplicity of the R's and the willingness of 60 million people to believe them. Why, oh why, do they not see? It's the RWCM. It's Karl Rasputin Rove, It's the messianic delusions of the religious fundies. It's the opiate of popular culture and rampant consumerism.

It's all of these and more. Still, I want them exposed. I want the scales to fall from their eyes and to know this emperor wears no clothes. Or at least that the ones he wears are filthy rags.

I've been trying to think of things that the Dems could come up with to force Repugs to show their true colors, particularly their racist ones.

Let the R's try to explain why they oppose slavery reparations. Or emergency services for undocumented aliens. How about making Ramadan a national holiday? How about mass refugee relocation to the US for displaced Palestinians?

Hey, it's late Saturday night (still) in this time zone, and I'm missing Kid Oakland's usual late night riff.

Just got back from my son's school's annual carnival. It's a huge event drawing thousands of people and enlisting an army of volunteers who spend a year getting it together. They spend all summer picking mangoes for chutney. Hold sugar drives for the best hot malasadas in town (beignets have nothing on these babies). Fly to the Big Island at their own expense to go hiking through the mountains to pick materials to make exquisite lei. Read More
