All over twitter since about 25 minutes ago, the GOP noise machine is making a lot of an old video of Obama speaking in 1998 in which the "money" quote is "I actually believe in redistribution".

3 Electoral College members may pass on Romney

Miami Herald:

At least three Republican electors say they may not support their party's presidential ticket when the Electoral College meets in December to formally elect the next president, escalating tensions within the GOP and adding a fresh layer of intrigue to the final weeks of the White House race.
The electors - all supporters of former GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul - told The Associated Press they are exploring options should Mitt Romney win their states. They expressed frustration at how Republican leaders have worked to suppress Paul's conservative movement and his legion of loyal supporters. (...)

I was watching the Madoff hearing on C-SPAN3 and couldn't believe it.

David Sirota's got it covered at Open Left.

At about 5:15 in, the General Counsel for SEC under Bush claims Executive Privilege in order to avoid answering Congressional questions.

I think it's time the Democratic Congress makes an example of these clowns.

Montgomery County (PA) Republican officials have decided, 56-0, on censuring County Commission chairman Jim Matthews.

He is, apparently, not Republican enough. Since being elected last year, he has frequently aligned himself with former US Congressman Joe Hoeffel, a Democrat, on the three man commission, in opposition to Bruce Castor, the other Republican.

The censure resolution says that Matthews

has promoted the cause of Democrat elected officials and implemented the Democrat platform; and he has systematically engaged in the hiring of Democrat Party operatives and Democrat failed candidates; and he has taken retribution on certain persons, because he perceived they did not support him in the Republican Party endorsement process.

County Republican Party chairman, Robert Kerns, concludes: "[Matthews] is not a Republican anymore."

Britt Hume is stepping down as Fox News anchor. He will become a part-time pundit by year's end.

But Hume says he's lost his enthusiasm because of "this poisonous atmosphere in Washington over the last 14 or 15 years. ... Sparks are what make news — there's dissent and disagreement, intense feelings and so on, which all contribute to an untidy and at times ugly, but nonetheless newsworthy, atmosphere."

I love this quote. I don't disagree with it, but I can't think of too many people who have been more poisonous to the atmosphere of news reporting.

"We've certainly been a forum, as everybody else has, for the arguments of the day," Hume replied. "We are more a reflection of it, I think, than a cause."

Sure you are, Britt. Sure you are.

Britt sees the writing on the wall. I wonder how many more wingnut "journalists" are going to lose their passion for their work now that they see their dream of a permanent wingnut majority swirl down the drain.

Happened to see this while checking the Scotusblog for updates on the Ohio voter suppression case (there is some new info there about that, by the way).

The Justice Department, in a new plea Thursday for the courts to keep 17 Guantanamo Bay prisoners out of the country, said that those detainees pose a risk “distinct to this Nation” — the fact that the U.S. is the country that has been holding them captive for six years. The assertion came in a reply brief in D.C. Circuit Court on the question of transferring the group of Chinese Muslim Uighurs to the U.S. during the time the government pursues an appeal to bar them permanently. The lead appeal among seven pending cases is Kiyemba v. Bush (08-5424).

I am grieving for Boom Boom. Boom Boom has been my beloved companion for 15 years. He was a stunningly beautiful cat, and he knew it. He loved nothing more than to cuddle and purr and knead. There is an empty place in my heart tonight.

Back in 2004 there was a website that listed various people's predictions for an "October Surprise". I forget where that site was and don't know if it still exists; maybe someone else here remembers.

Anyway, I thought it would be fun for people here to predict what type of "October Surprises" the Republicans may have in store for us in the next few weeks.

I imagine most of these will be lighthearted, but I'll start with a chilling one that my father predicted months ago... after the jump.

I'm just posting this because it amuses me. It has no relevance to anything. But on the other hand it's long for a comment.

I was having fun with Experian's "National Score Index" which, among other things, gives average credit scores on a state by state basis.

I pulled them out into a list in state order (over the hump).

Amir Taheri, a neo-con and one-time "prominent Iranian journalist under the Shah", who has made many claims that have since been debunked, has made a new dubious claim in today's New York Post.

He claims that Obama tried to make a secret deal with Iraq to delay any agreement on troop withdrawals until after the US Presidential elections in November. This, if true, would be reminiscent of when Reagan made a deal with Iran not to release the embassy hostages (which probably is the inspiration for his tale).

No doubt this is already being "seriously discussed" on wingnut pundit programs.
