A unanimous federal appeals court yesterday ruled that county commissioners in Haskell County, Oklahoma unconstitutionally sought to promote their personal religious beliefs by erecting a Ten Commandments monument on the front lawn of the county's courthouse. The decision by the U.S. Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals comes in a challenge filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Oklahoma on behalf of a local resident.

It is amazing how the gospel has changed since I used to go to Sabbath and Sunday school. My memories of Bible verses, religious songs, hand holding, prayer, potlucks and sermons will never be the same. Seems that the "old time religion" that I grew up with has regressed to a new low in a Kentucky church.

A Kentucky pastor didn't get the memo that churches are considered "safe havens" from all that is wrong with the world. They are now sanctuaries for firearms! Imagine that.

Has Jesus has come full circle?

I am absolutely giddy. I think I am even happier today than I was on November 5th, 2008.

A Hispanic Woman has been nominated to the Supreme Court of the United States of America. What does this mean for me and the other Hispanic American Women out there? I'll tell you.

We get to pull up our chairs and sit at the official table.

I dedicate this diary to those women in my life who influenced the way I feel today. To those women who kept pulling the chair out from under me and to those who kept pushing me forward.

It is fair to say that we all "know" that some churches in the U.S. have had some back-seat-influence when it comes to legislation involving civil rights and privacy issues.

But, only in New Mexico, will the Governor admit it. Straight from Governor Richardson's mouth.

Richardson acknowledged the ongoing negotiations Tuesday between the Catholic Church and supporters of partnerships, saying that the two sides were "looking at defining exactly the domestic partner responsibilities, exactly what it means."

My questions aren't for all of you. My questions are directed at those of that are objecting to President Obama speaking at Notre Dame. I know, this is old news. But, this is the straw that is breaking the proverbial camel's back...and mine.

I find your outrage over President Obama's support of limited stem cell research, and his funding for family planning clinics, fake.

Many Catholics are angered by Obama's planned appearance at the May 17 ceremony because of his decisions to provide federal funding for embryonic stem cell research and international family planning groups that provide abortions or educate about the procedure.

This diary is dedicated to my cousin. He died, alone, 20 years ago from AIDS. His family, my Aunt and Uncle, didn't tell anyone he had AIDS. We were told he had a "blood disease."

This diary is also dedicated to my brother-in-law who tried, relentlessly, to adopt a child. He couldn't. He is gay.

And, this diary is dedicated to my friends who don't have the same civil rights that I have.

Yeah, I know the CEO's are crying big ole' sloppy crocodile tears about the possiblity of their ginourmous salaries being capped at a miserable $500,000 per year. But, being the bleeding heart liberal that I am, it is part of my nature to reach across the aisle and give them some practical pointers on how to live on on a meeger half a million a year.

It is also my patriotic duty.

It was buzzing around by the window until I smashed it. I know this isn't big news for most in North America, especially those in the southern states and Florida. But it is here, in Albuquerque. Why?

Because I live at 6500 feet and it is January.

Contrary to popular belief, we have four distinct seasons in New Mexico, and, at this time of year it should be much colder than it is. We've been experiencing very high temperatures for January.

Ever hear of a Fusion Center?

They are run by the Department of Homeland Security and are locally based across the country.

A fusion center is an effective and efficient mechanism to exchange information and intelligence, maximize resources, streamline operations, and improve the ability to fight crime and terrorism by merging data from a variety of sources.

At first blush this sounds good. After 9/11 discussions were had about how to streamline communication between local and federal law enforcement agencies.

How do the powerful get others to kill? How do they influence an agenda of violence and war?

They dehumanize the enemy, supposed or real.

I certainly don't profess to be an authority in the strategies of war, psychology or psychiatric behaviors. But I understand dehumanization.

Dehumanization is a psychological process whereby opponents view each other as less than human and thus not deserving of moral consideration.
