Arctic Sea Ice Extent daily image. Is something up?

FALSE ALARM: No need to keep reading, it looks as though the folks at NSIDC posted some faulty information and their website is now updated.

I had quite an eye-popping moment when I went to look at the daily chart on the Arctic Sea Ice News and Analysis website. The first thing I noticed was the drop off in sea ice extent shown on the chart that is clearly evident over the past couple of days. However, as I looked closer at the image portion of the update on the left, I saw PLENTY of blue in the Hudson Bay and little blue spots popping up all along the Canadian North and Alaska.

Needless to say, this gave me some concern...

I settled into my usual Sunday talk show routine this morning. I got my coffee and some breakfast and settled on the couch with one of my cats curled up on my lap. There were a few moments that brought me to the following conclusion:

Be prepared on election night to see people break down on national television. With the exception of Fox News, I expect to see at least one national media figure/pundit/politician on each major broadcast break down in a teary, emotional reaction because of the enormity of Barack Obama's win.

Evening all.

When I was twelve years old, I had a crush on a guy who was a few years older than me. I truly was smitten. I was obsessed. I was twelve.

It was 1982. Coppertone QT just hit the shelves. Remember that stuff? The fake tan that turned your skin orange and turned your cuticles and hand creases brown if you didn't wash it off well enough?

I'll say it again: I love this man!

Not only does he respond with class, but he does it on their turf! Apparently the interview with Michael Smerconish (Philadelphia) will air tomorrow.

Obama on Ayers: 'I assumed that he had been rehabilitated'

UPDATE: I should note (having learned this from commenters below) that while Smerconish IS a conservative, his show is not of the wing nut variety like Limbaugh and Hannity. Also, he seems generally supportive of Obama. But given that he is a conservative, I am leaving my title as is.

Joe Biden says what needs to be said:

"You know, the idea here that somehow these guys are, once again, injecting fear and loathing into this campaign I think is mildly dangerous," Biden added. "I mean, here you have out there these kinds of, you know, incitements out there — a guy introducing Barack using his middle name as if it's some epitaph or something. This is over the top."

On ABC’s "Good Morning America" the Democratic vice presidential candidate said that since Palin announced that the "heels are on, the gloves are off" she has crossed the line at her rallies and is encouraging supporters who Biden believes are going "overboard."

"I think it goes way too far," Biden said. "Look, this really is a case where when you don't have anything to talk about, attack. And it gets really over the edge."

"I mean, some of the stuff she's saying about Barack Obama and the stuff that people are yelling from the crowd, if she hears it, she should be at least saying, whoa, whoa, whoa; that's overboard. I mean, you know, this is — this is volatile stuff. And it's — I just — I felt we were kind of beyond this place that it seems to be going."

Afternoon all.

I'm sensing it's a rough day for many. Concern and fear over the economic situation. Anger and outrage over the incitement of violence by McCain/Palin. Apprehension and hope over tonight's debate. Excitement and encouragement over the latest poll numbers.

If you combine all of those emotions, it's pretty darn exhausting.

This is going to be a short diary, but I've just had an epiphany and I think it's diary worthy. I just explained it to my husband and his response was, "Aha! Makes sense!"

First off, the strategists in Obama's campaign deserve every penny they make, they are phenominal. They have made an informed gamble and I suspect it will pay off. They are betting on the fact that Palin will fall flat on her face tonight based on all of their research combined with current events and interviews.

It's like a tennis match. She will lose on unforced errors and Biden just has to focus on playing a solid game.

I realize this probably isn't news or perhaps it's old news. However, it is news to me. I watched the first part of Greta van Susterin's interview with "the first dude", Todd Palin, and in the interview he says that on a Saturday about three weeks ago (August 23, 2008) while he was working on the Slope, Sarah called him about the news. He said (transcript and emphasis mine):

"There were inquiries from certain people about some of our background... Didn't know if she was on a shortlist or if this was all for show..."

So he returned home to be with the kids so that she could "go outside for that day".

This was in response to Greta's question:

"Take me back to when you first heard there was a possibility that Senator McCain wanted to talk to you..."

As I'm sure is the case with many of you, I am anxiously awaiting the debates. Not just the three Presidential debates, but clearly I am anxious about the Vice Presidential debate, particularly given Palin's less than stellar interview with ABC last night.

So, I decided to go and find out when these debates were going to be held so I could be sure to be home. I read through the news release from November 2007 and was extremely encouraged to see one of the changes that was made to the format, a change that could significantly impact the VP debate, a change that in hindsight (given the Palin pick) may have the McCain camp scrambling to have it rescinded.

After a long, hard fought primary battle of being up against seasoned, nationally recognized Republicans such as Mitt Romney and Rudy Guiliani, Gov. Unfortunately, I did watch the Palin speech last night.

What I found the most interesting was when McCain came out to greet her at the end. He looked really uncomfortable, I thought. When he hugged her (both times), she kept her body as far away from him as possible and looked, to my mind anyway, disgusted by him.
