Why does Dr. Jill Stein have her money ($3.8 to $8.5 million) invested in index and mutual funds with substantial holdings in Big Oil, Big Pharma, Big Finance, defense contractors/weapons manufacturers, and tobacco (OMG, a doctor?) instead of investing in “green” and “socially responsible” index and mutual funds?
Because: “ I have not yet found the mutual funds that represent my goals of advancing the cause of people, planet, and peace.”
This quote came as part of her campaign’s response to a request for comment from the Daily Beast, for their new story story on Stein and her husband’s decidedly un-”green” and un-”Green” investment portfolio, “Jill Stein’s Ideology Says One Thing—Her Investment Portfolio Says Another”
So because no mutual fund is perfect (according to her), she is content to let the “greater evil” use her money — and make her lots of money! although, sure, having a nice fat inherited bundle helps when you’re amassing a fortune, too — while “playing” a pure-hearted revolutionary on the national stage.
And she’s had the chutzpah to ask Clinton voters how we can “sleep at night”?
And it’s not just mutual funds. According to this investigative report from Daily Beast, she has a direct investment of between $50,001 and $100,000 in the pharmaceutical giant Merck.
I am not surprised by this story. What i have always seen when I look at Dr. Jill Stein is privilege personified. One of those ”listen to what I say, not what I do” people. One of those who can casually say there’s “not a dime’s worth of difference” between GOP and Dem policies, because they have no real-world experience with such, because they are personally insulated due to their privilege.
They’ll never need food stamps; their daughters won’t need free birth control from clinics; their children won’t have to enlist in the military to get an education; and their residences are no doubt in areas where homeless veterans are not sleeping on their front steps.
But the sheer hypocrisy of the Green Party candidate for President using her own personal fortune in such a cavalier, thoughtless and “evil” fashion is stunning, nonetheless.
I doubt there’s many left reading here at Daily Kos who are considering voting Green in the Presidential election — though some in decidedly Democratic states may still be thinking about it. But maybe your friends are? And if the reason they say they are is because Jill Stein truly represents them, she is truly the kind of person who reflects their moral and social values, and voting for somebody like that to appease their own “conscience” is more important, more noble, more moral — than voting for a “lesser evil” mainstream, socially liberal but Wall Street Democrat who voted for the Iraq invasion — well, maybe this will change their mind.
