So we must also ask: Are there American servicemen and servicewomen in Iraq making do with second- or third-best because of Cunningham's new house and fancy waterborne digs in D.C.?

In support of his proposed amendment, Cunningham tells us to "Ask the men and women who stood on top of the Trade Center... Ask them and they will tell you: pass this amendment."

As Hlinko mentioned briefly earlier, we at the DCCC have been collecting stories about how stem cell research relates to our members' personal lives. If you're like me, stem cell research was not near the top of your radar screen. But if you're like me, reading these stories will change that immediately - we've gotten about 1,000 already, and every one is a universe. Working on the Hill, it's difficult to avoid slipping into a certain level of cynicism. These stories set my dial back to zero, and made me realize why so many Republicans - who have choked down the party line on so much else - would buck the fervent opposition of both Tom DeLay and George Bush to pass this bill through the House. But as you may well know, it still needs to get through the Senate, and if it is vetoed, we will need another 52 Republicans to override that. If we can get these stories circulating, I think we can really put some pressure on the holdouts - be they Frist, Bush, or the nameless 52 - to make this happen now.

I'm pretty sure I saw a diary referencing this latest Dubose piece on Norquist, Abramoff, and Bush generally, but I wanted to focus in on Abramoff and the Bush Department of the Interior. I'm laying out a fair amount of stuff here, but I have a sense that I'm only scratching the surface, and I was hoping other folks might help me go deeper. It often struck me as odd that the Republicans - though not necessarily their echo chamber - use the phrase "liberal media filter" as opposed to simply "liberal media." A small thing, but it seems to violate one of the commandments of Republican message manipulation, namely that the shorter and more concise a talking point, the better. Read More

NEWS ALERT : HASTINGS OFFERS TO OPEN IMMEDIATE DELAY INVESTIGATION
House Ethics Chairman Hastings told reporters today that the Ethics panel would proceed immediately on an investigation of Majority Leader DeLay if Democrats on the panel approve two alterations to GOP-backed rules during a Thursday meeting of the full committee. "Let me emphasize that this is an unusual and extraordinary step for the committee to take," Hastings said in reference to the investigation, noting that the panel is empowered to self-initiate investigations. However, Democrats are unlikely to accept Hastings' offer, as Ethics ranking member Alan Mollohan, D-W.Va., is calling for a bipartisan taskforce to review the rules. Mollohan is scheduled to hold his own news conference at 4 p.m. to respond publicly to Hastings' offer.

As we discussed a couple weeks ago, articulated most poignantly by Billmon, Tom DeLay and his allies attempted to take the Republican Party hostage by hijacking the base and threatening to use it against any Republican who might turn against DeLay.

But then a few Republicans with uphill battles for re-election in Democratic states and districts decided they could use an easy "one of the good ones" headline and started slipping out the door. Santorum slipped out, albeit cautiously. Then Shays. Then Chafee. And lo, the hostages were surprised to see that there were no bullets in Tom DeLay's gun.

Since DeLay and his allies declared their litmus test, and even before, we've been discussing how the White House would handle the DeLay situation. We've noted that DeLay's strategy was to hijack the religious right base and use it as a deterent to any Republicans, including Rove, who might want to knock him off. The strategy seemed to be working.
