It's been raining cats and dogs for three days. Sure we need the moisture, but all at once? Don't think so. Anyway...since the environment doesn't seem to be on the question list for these "debates"....here is some Environmental News to USE!

Yes. You can cast your vote for a candidate in New Hampshire on Tuesday, even if you aren't registered to vote in the Granite State.

Mt. Washington Observatory is holding a Primary to see who will be it's new mascot, after Nin, weather cat extraordinaire retired in December.

In true New Hampshire fashion, we will rely on the voice of the people to decide who will rule Mount Washington.

It's Saturday. It's surprisingly cold here in Santa Barbara. (CA cold...not "real" cold) Just the day to catchup on Air America shows and blog. Now...without further adeiu...Environmental News - to use.

There's more life on ice than celebrity bears. So far, only the polar bears get a chance at threatened status, even though walrus, some of the seals and seabirds, and unknown numbers of smaller ice-loving creatures depend on that shrinking polar cap. Science News.

Help! Beetlemania rages in Yukon forests. The spruce beetle, no longer faced with killer winter cold snaps, is on a destructive rampage that has left at least 40 million trees dead or dying in the Yukon. With temperatures rising, there is no end in sight to the carnage. Toronto Star

Well...after listening to talk of H.R. 1955, I'm scared shitless, really. Environmentalists and forward "green thinkers" have been targeted as being "terrorists" before, but when a so called "Democrat" puts forward a bill that could move Environmental Groups further up on the Terrorist list. That's real toxic thinking on Jane Harman's part.

Now...news a tad less scary.

An environmental contaminant invades the womb. Arsenic is poised to become even more notorious. Scientists have found that if a pregnant woman is exposed, the deadly contaminant can alter the activity of several genes in her fetus, potentially increasing the child's risk of cancer later in life. I've come out of my tryptophan coma...but I'm being laid low by a depression that is becoming evermore apparent. The Holidays are upon us and I've seen big SUV's circling the full parking lots for hours looking for a space. Teens at a restaurant belittling the waitress for having to work. People ordering up glasses of water and not touching them. Scads of paper products being used to wrap up oodles of gifts that both will probably end up in the garbage. But...onward...to Environmental News that hopefully someone can USE.

Source of water for West at risk. The West's natural water-delivery system is breaking down under the strain of rising temperatures, upsetting a fragile truce between people and the dry land they inhabit. And, remember....Hydroelectric generators need flowing water to turn the turbines, but they're often at the back of the line when it comes to securing water rights.Phoenix Arizona Republic
