Editor’s Note: Elizabeth Gaynes, director of an organization creating opportunities for people affected by the criminal justice system to further develop their strengths and lead lives of responsibility and contribution known as the Osborne Association, spoke recently at their tenth annual Lighting the Way Breakfast on Park Avenue. The speech was so impressive, with phrases such as “a country that savors punishment and depends on prisons economically,” that I asked her to condense it for this column.

New York, N.Y. One hundred years ago Thomas Mott Osborne walked into Auburn Prison and voluntarily spent a week among men he came to call his brothers. He did not romanticize them but neither did he demonize them, and that was his gift. Later as warden of Sing Sing prison he asked the question that still haunts us: “Shall our prisons be scrap heaps or human repair shops?”

New York, N.Y. I recently attended Ticket2Bollywood (T2B) sponsored by Molecule Communications. I had the opportunity to interview its director Ajay Shrivastav and his sister and business partner Kiren.

Brother and sister Ajay and Kiren Shrivastav are opposites. He is the creative one and Kiren more the businesswoman operating Molecule Communications in Mumbai and Ajay is opening their first overseas branch in New York, where he has lived for twelve years involved with food and fashion - and now film. The siblings share the same passion but view different approaches.

New York, N.Y. Speaking broadly, we don’t appreciate Bollywood because we don’t understand it. We fail to grasp it not for any intellectual flaw, but for a major cultural one: we didn’t grow up in India. The biggest point to absorb to better get Bollywood is that Indian cinema is both sophisticated and unique. Films began to be made in India in the 1890’s, at the same time as film was being created in France.

I first met New York-based music composer Wayne Sharpe two years ago at the New York Indo-American Film Festival (NYIFF). He was the first American I had ever encountered who worked for Bollywood. Recently I had the chance to attend a conference that focused on the economic impact of Bollywood in New York City - and Wayne was there to speak about his experiences.

Havana, Cuba. I consider myself such a lucky person. At almost 75, I have visited over 140 countries on all continents, and I have lived in the U.S. for over 50 years. My impresario and cultural exchange work took me to many countries in the world. During the Cold War, I visited almost all of the communist countries – except for Cuba and North Korea. Finally, I am in Havana, making up for lost time.

New York, N.Y. Cornell NYC Tech is headed to Roosevelt Island, New York City -- 'Silicon Island of the East.' Architect Tadeusz Sudol of the Roosevelt Island Visual Art Association (RIVAA) believes that there could be a New Museum of Technology, Art and Science (MOOTAS) on Roosevelt Island as well. A RIVAA Gallery exhibition has just opened that includes a depiction of Tad's vision for the plant, along with images of technology inside the structure.

In 2011, the filmmaker behind the movies Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive organized for his foundation to donate $1 million to launch Operation Warrior Wellness (OWW) in Los Angeles, an initiative to help 10,000 veterans overcome post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other war-related illnesses. New York, N.Y. “I want to be a lawyer. I want to give a voice to my brothers and sisters here at the orphanage who have no voice. I love them all.” Said an abandoned girl living in an orphanage in the Dominican Republic told the team from the Orphaned Starfish Foundation (OSF).

If you are an orphan in Latin America, the Caribbean or Africa, the odds are overwhelming that you will spend your childhood and teenager years living in an institution.

The odds are also overwhelming that when you leave that orphanage or home, within a year, you will become homeless, addicted to drugs, a gang member, a prostitute or any one of a number of horrible outcomes due to lack of education and job training.
