Earlier today I drove from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles to attend a meeting of progressives. Brad Friedman of BradBlog was there, Jason Leopold of TruthOut was there, and David Swanson was there speaking about his latest book: http://davidswanson.org/

I spoke with all of them. They seem to think I wrote the Constitution, they seem to think the principle behind the convention clause of Article V is my concept. Below is the e-mail I just sent off based on our conversations.

Do we really need links to some of the diaries on the Rec list of the past 24 hours (or the past five years for that matter)? Is it not clear yet what needs to be done?

Do you really think we'll survive intitutionalized corruption with the same approach of yesteryear?

The following diary is tedious--not something you can scan and comment on without considerable thought. Of course you can, but then you’re somewhat a hypocrite because one of the things we lament as Progressives is how much of the political right simply believes whatever it wants, facts be damned. So all I’m asking here is if you have time and feel like reading/contemplating the following, you consider not everyone believes what you believe, not everyone has lived the life you’ve lived, not everyone has processed the information you have. The trick is and has always been: how do we get everyone on the same page so we can defeat the forces of institutionalized corruption? We don’t have all the time in the world to do this.

But do you get it? Money runs the show, and until we remove it from governance and policy decisions, we, sensible, red-blooded progressives, will wither away unto death. Death. Dead. No more.

Do I need to list all the diaries and comments of the past 24 hours? Most of us know well what's going on. But what's going on is not our fate unless we allow it to be.

There’s a speech in Hamlet where, to articulate it, it’s a question: How could you have gone from this to this? How could you have gone from something so great to something so rank?

Whenever I’ve looked over this speech I’ve always seen it as metaphor of American constitutional government and democracy. How could we have gone from government by and for the people to by and for the corrupt (and those willing to be corrupted in order to become part of them)?

As you may or may not know, 80%+ of all votes cast in this upcoming election will be cast upon proprietary source code. Meaning we actually have no way of knowing whether the vast majority of results are true and valid. Transparent elections and a free society are one and the same, we can’t have one without the other. Seeing how two private corporations tally eight tenths of all votes, and all behind closed doors, we currently have neither.
