The election is closing and it may seem that there’s so little time now to make an impact.
However, the sheer number of GREAT downballot Democratic candidates outweighs my puny attempts to do them all justice.
And, yes, when it comes to local races, there’s always time to support candidates and have your grassroots contribution make a difference, right up until election day!
I’ve had the honor of covering 30 amazing local Dem candidates in the run up to this election and numbers 31 and 32 are as exciting and relevant as the rest. They both have a strong chance of winning one the crucial decisive seats in North Carolina, as well.
Remember in 2017 where we Democrats surprised ourselves in the Virginia and almost, but not quite, took the House of Delegates? Well, we may well have the exact same scenario play out in North Carolina this year, where we are poised to flip this entire state Blue if we finish up strong.
Local North Carolina blogger Long Leaf Pine Slate wrote about the state of the race for the NC statehouse, while highlighting their Final Four races here on dkos.
I’d like to highlight just two of the remaining candidates who I think have the strongest chance of winning and represent absolutely crucial seats in North Carolina, a state that could play an essential role in the fate of the Presidency, the US Senate, the House of Representatives and in its very own state house, where the Senate and the House could flip blue.

“Voices” — Aimy Steele NC-HD-82
“I am running to be in a constant state of advocacy for people, and making sure our collective voices are heard.”
NC House candidate Aimy Steele
Aimy Steele sounds an essential note for Democrats in 2020: being a leader that brings everyone to the table and makes sure that all of our voices are heard.
For Steele, an elementary school principal running North of Charlotte (and inside the critical US Congressional race in NC-08), education is central to opportunity and the foundation of our society. It’s no surprise that Steele is endorsed by a diverse array of solid progressive organizations and causes.
Viewing her bio, there’s no question that Aimy has the kind of leadership, and ability to bring the kind of focus on the key issues that North Carolina needs:

“Born and raised in Chowan County” — Emily Bunch Nicholson NC-HD-01
Emily Bunch Nicholson is poised to bring generational change to the Northeastern region of North Carolina in NC-HD-01 and you can smell the winds of change and what a breath of fresh air Nicholson would bring to the district in the local paper’s non-endorsement endorsement in the race!
Truth is, on crucial issues that matter to North Carolina voters like jobs, education and medicaid expansion, Nicholson represents the future of North Carolina! Running in HD-1, Nicholson has the best chance out of all the “long shot” candidates to win the crucial decisive vote to give Democrats the majority in the NC House. She’s even consistently beat her opponent’s anemic fundraising, such that he’s complaining about those pesky out of state donors (Republicans are always MORE than happy to feed on the big donor cash when it’s offered, btw) which is always a good sign.
But what comes off in Emily’s campaign is her sincere commitment to making a difference in a region where she is rooted in a role where her experience building opportunity and jobs is directly relevant:
Emily could very well be that “last candidate” in a close election that swings the NC House. And the thing is, win or lose, in supporting Emily, you also help Democrats upballot running for...uh, President of the US and US Senator for NC. Every last cent will go to making change in North Carolina!
You can donate to Emily directly here.

About this series:
I’m a longtime local election activist and Dailykos blogger dating back to 2003. I was part of helping local blogs and the netroots drive Democrats to take back the House in 2006 and helped build some of the biggest and most successful grassroots and online groups supporting Barack Obama.
The 2020 Democratic State Legislative candidates are heroes, and deserve our support. (If you are on Twitter please click on that link!) They are our best chance of changing US politics including GOP voter suppression and gerrymandering for decades to come and many of them will run campaigns that help us win electoral college votes and key US Senate and House votes:

This is an unaffiliated fundraising page that I created to provide a data-private, email opt out default option for those looking to contribute to many candidates at one time without signing up for emails or sharing your info with a group.
You are able to donate to 25 worthy local candidates flipping Red seats Blue, but with the email setting to default opt-out (you have to opt-in at the end if you want to be subscribed.) Not only does this send last minute money to crucial local campaigns (who can spend on digital GOTV right up until the last second!) but it also lets you save yourself the hassle of unsubscribing from multiple lists. Even small donations split multiple ways make an impact. 94 of us have donated a grand total $7,004 so far, and every donation is definitely appreciated by the candidates.
I know we can grow that total even more, as the election closes.
Trust me, this will help us win.
Please consider donating today.
