The following message was sent to my cousin, a teacher in Wisconsin, warning that retired Wisconsin state employees should not imagine that they are safe from Gov. Scott Walker’s schemes and depredations. Please, spread the word, and support the Wisconsin workers by attending these Rallies to Save the American Dream.

Today when the New York Times reports "Tax Cut Timing Is Proving Problematic for Democrats," I faxed and mailed the following letter to President Obama and sent similar messages to his economic team (Austan Goolsbee, Jared Bernstein, Elizabeth Warren), along with Vice President Biden, David Axelrod, Valerie Jarrett, Democratic National Committee chairman Tim Kaine, and others.

Between 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, which do you think gets most attention, and why?

[ 9/12 postscript: A few commenters below question whether the actual anniversary of 9/11 is the appropriate day to compare the two tragedies. It’s a fair question. Reply: Yes, appropriate indeed. 9/11, coming just 2 weeks after 5th anniversary of Katrina, seemed an especially apt occasion to observe that the two catastrophes (which I don’t attempt to equate) receive very different kinds of attention and are put to very different uses, and to suggest that one is more revealing about the long-term threats America faces. No disrespect intended; I tried to make that very clear. ]

LeveesNotWar.org welcomes President Obama on his third visit to oil-spoiled southern Louisiana since the BP Earth Day Blowout. We call on the president to heal the nation’s sense of helplessness—and blow away the sniping pundits—by launching a full-scale alternative energy reform initiative on the scale of America’s mobilization in World War II: the Manhattan Project, the TVA, the Interstate Highway System, or the Apollo mission—or all of these combined.
