This is going to be a very, very short rant expressing my outrage over the fact that all indices are pointing to a probable cholera epidemic in New Orleans over the next few days.

Cholera! In the US! It's unbelievable. Cholera is a disease common to the third world. It usually is communicated by drinking water that has been contaminated with feces. It can happen anywhere, but our public health infrastructure in the US usually deals with this sort of thing very quickly. Read More

At least three people a day have died while trying to cross the desert since the beginning of July, setting the deadliest pace yet for illegal immigrants in Arizona.

18 people died last week in the Sonoran desert of heat exhaustion despite the cooperative, 24/7 efforts of humanitarian aid organizations like Samaritan Patrols, No More Deaths, Humane Borders and Derechos Humanos to find them and intervene to prevent their deaths. Those 18 are only the bodies that were found last week.

It may surprise you that these humanitarian aid workers are being arrested and charged with felony obstruction of justice for giving crossers water and transporting them to medical facilities.

Son wants chance to find mom's body

Migrant awaits nod to join desert search

Jesus Abran Buenrostro, 15, and his grandfather Cesario Dominguez wait in Nogales, Son., for news of Buenrostro's mother, Lecrecia Luna Dominguez, who died in the desert while crossing illegally with Buenrostro. The youth is awaiting approval to re-enter the country to help in a search for her body. Other family members and Tucsonans have been scouring the desert southwest of Tucson for the body.
Fifteen-year-old Jesus Abran Buenrostro Dominguez memorized the silhouette of Baboquivari Peak as his mother lay dying on the desert floor.

If he could remember where they were, maybe he could get help. His mother, 35-year-old Lecrecia Luna Dominguez, died before he had the chance.

Now all he wants is the chance to find her body and bring her home.

[Update](I received the following via email from a pal. It originally ran in the SF Chronicle and was written by Jon Carroll) The following is the first communique from a group calling itself Unitarian Jihad. It was sent to me at The Chronicle via an anonymous spam remailer. I have no idea whether other news organizations have received this communique,
and, if so, why they have not chosen to print it. Perhaps they fear starting a panic. I feel strongly that the truth, no matter how alarming, trivial or disgusting, must always be told. I am pleased to report that the words below are at least not disgusting:

"Greetings to the imprisoned Citizens of the United States. We are Unitarian Jihad. There is only God, unless there is more than one God. The vote of our God subcommittee is 10-8 in favor of one God, with two abstentions. Brother Flaming Sword of Moderation noted the possibility of there being no God at all, and his objection was noted with love by the secretary.
