MSNBC is reporting that Stevens was found guilty of making false statements. Developing.

Alaska Daily News confirms:

WASHINGTON - A jury has found U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens guilty of all seven counts of lying on his financial disclosure forms.

It is the highest-profile felony conviction in a sweeping four-year federal investigation into corruption in Alaska politics, and an almost unprecedented conviction by a jury of a sitting U.S. senator.

In a stunning blow to the Bush Administration in its war-on-terrorism policies, the Supreme Court ruled Thursday that foreign nationals held at Guantanamo Bay have a right to pursue habeas challenges to their detention. The Court, dividing 5-4, ruled that Congress had not validly taken away habeas rights.

The consolidated cases are Boumediene v. Bush and Al-Odah v. Bush, where the DC Circuit Court of Appeals had upheld the Military Commissions Act of 2006. Background here.

Justice Kennedy's opinion (with syllabus) is here. Chief Justice Roberts and Justices Scalia, Thomas, and Alito dissented.

By a vote of 157-39, the Massachusetts state legislature today defeated the anti-same-sex-marriage state constitutional amendment that was passed 105-92 last year. Had it been approved by a majority of the legislature again this year, it would have gone to the voters for final approval in 2006. The amendment would have banned same-sex marriages but would have provided for civil unions.

Marriage opponents recently received certification of another amendment which would ban marriages without providing civil unions. As a citizen initiative, it would only need to receive support of 25% of the legislature in two consecutive years. A similar citizen-initiative amendment was killed by parliamentary maneuvering in 2002 (the convention was gavelled closed without a vote). Today's amendment did not even receive 25% approval, although the motivations of those who voted nay may have been mixed.

Andrea Moro at the University of Minnesota has a site that fetches new polls from 2.004k.com hourly and recalculates the probability that Bush will (or won't) win on election day based on those polls. Bush's chances have plummeted pretty severely in the past few days.

New LATimes poll favors Kerry

The LATimes has new poll results in their Sunday edition. Although the poll only covers respondents who watched the debate, the results show Kerry improved his stats with those viewers across the board.

The poll, conducted Thursday night and Friday, surveyed 1,368 registered voters who participated in a Times survey last week and agreed to be contacted after the Sept. 30 debate. Among the group, 725 voters said they had watched the debate; it is their responses the poll reports. The poll, supervised by polling director Susan Pinkus, has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

The Supreme Court handed down its opinions today in Cheney v. U.S. District Court. It hasn't hit the presses yet, but SCOTUSblog has a flash item:

Per Kennedy, the Court vacates. The government's mandamus petition is timely and not barred by laches. Mandamus can be issued because this is no mere discovery order. The Executive Branch has a special status and informs the mandamus standard. The Court doesn't decide the ultimate mandamus issue. So it's a partial win for Cheney. It's a heavily divided opinion. Ginsburg dissents from the bench. It appears at first blush to be 5-2-2.
