With the Iran agreement in the bag, the hawks are out and on the prowl to tear it down, lest - heaven forbid - words and rational negotiation become recognized as legitimate tools of power. As Winston Churchill said, 'to jaw-jaw is always better than to war-war.' But what did that guy know?

Two things this week. First, an image about the self-congratulatory nature of the Confederate flag coming down in South Carolina and moving to the state's Confederate Relic Room. While a good start (and a massively delayed one - let's hope the next step doesn't take another 150 years), this is indeed only the beginning. The flag may be down, but other parts of the Confederacy are alive, well, and have hardly been relegated to relic status.

Secondly, a comic in honor of self-proclaimed serf-herder and wannabe Head-Neocon Bush III (pronounced ay-yi-yi). Now that Jeb! has presciently explained that the path to prosperity is simply paved by the peasants working longer hours, we can all rest easy knowing the solution to America's economic woes have been so straightforward all along.

Of course, you could opt instead to follow the Ernst Stavro Blofeld-inspired mantra: YOU DO NOT BUSH THRICE. (And for heaven's sake, you do not Trump once.)

It hardly seems worth keeping up with Donald Trump news day-to-day, though far be it for it to lack entertainment. It's obvious that that Trump has no actual chance of winning the Presidency. Nor, for that matter, does he likely care to. This is a guy who clearly just wants to be on TV. And is succeeding.

For now, his foibles and gaffes sit in the realm of global importance somewhere between reality television and daytime talk shows. They are each about as amusing, and certainly as depressing as the other (though granted, I might be alone in my proclivity to find daytime television apocalyptically soul-destroying).

In fact, the only reasons Trump matters at all in this arena are twofold. One: the surging support he is experiencing from Republican primary voters according to polls is disheartening, if not shocking. A frighteningly large chunk of Republicans would be fine with Trump as President, and like what he is saying. That says a lot about public opinion in America. The second reason Trump matters, is that his views don't skew that far from what the average Republican or Republican candidate thinks. Just because Trump spews his rhetoric with disregard for offense, the substance is not actually far off from mainstream Republican opinion.

So while we're all busy blasting Trump for being an buffoon (which he is), we should remember he's the clown voice of a very, very serious, very damaging party agenda - one which very well could take the White House.

Anyways, don't forget try this 'create your own cartoon' thing. The method, unfortunately, works without fail.

Cartoon: Changing times in America

Fighting mainstream social progress has never ultimately proven to be a good look, and it's bad for business to look a fool. Thus, one of the most reliable events following progress' acceptance is that business (or at least, smart business - I'm looking at you, Hobby Lobby.) will jump on board. It can be seen in companies' sudden recall of Confederate flag products, and in all the newly rainbow-infused logos across the internet this week.

On the whole, this is good. From the largest company to the smallest child, all are welcome on the side of liberalism and justice. But it's also a good moment to consider what remains unchanged. Be it the mass-commercialization of guns, unfair employee treatment, environmental irresponsibility, or any harmful business practice, replacing a frowning mask with a smiling one doesn't remove the underlying issues. It's the same product, just a different corporate strategy.

Personally, I wonder how long it will be before companies inevitably start marketing rainbow-flag-decorated guns. Why not? After all, if there's one thing Americans agree on more than the everyone's right to marriage equality, it's every wedding guest's right to a well-armed ceremony.

Oh, and here's Scalia looking annoyed at a jar of applesauce.

Those who support flying the Confederate flag argue that it's merely a harmless symbol of heritage. Y'know, just like all those other flags representing bygone governments that systematically dehumanized, enslaved and killed people on ethnic grounds during their rule. That kind of symbol of heritage. If only there was a similar symbol with which to draw a historical comparison.

Oh. Right.

Cartoon: Where guns belong

The TSA's ineffectiveness has been the subject of news lately, alongside news of states further loosening gun regulations and of course, the never-ending stream of tragedy related to both purposeful and accidental gun use. I continue, as ever, to wonder why there is even a hierarchy on where in public Americans can bring their vastly overstocked supply of deadly weaponry in the first place.

If we're going on logic (which is tenuous, and not nearly as effective as invoking faith, claims of patriotism, or vehement shouting), what really is the difference between carrying a gun on a plane and toting it around any other populated area? Location aside, a gun is an object whose sole purpose when used is to cause death or at best, injury. Whereabouts notwithstanding, these are not ideal outcomes. I guess you could argue that a gun could be used as, say, a bookend or a table leg, but I'd still be pretty curious as to why you're carting your bookend cum table leg cum weapon around town. And don't get me started on why modern civilized 'revolution' will not occur due to citizenry being permitted to open-carry their guns to Starbucks.

Ultimately, I'd love to see a time in which America ends its strange and backward-thinking love affair with guns. I know this is a pipe dream, but hey- it's only American to dream. Call me a bleeding heart liberal. As long as I'm not forced to be a corpse on the ground with a bullet in my chest and an actual bleeding heart.

Cartoon: A new(ish) dawn

This week, after a string of raucous debates and rousing voting sprees involving nearly as much action and nail-biting excitement as a low-octane team sport (at least, for those of us who follow CSPAN like it's ESPN and shout rallying cries like 'Go sports!' at actual sports games) the Senate allowed several sections of the Patriot Act to sunset. No cause for alarm though, despite the world-is-burning protestations of certain politicians. The world did not ignite in this 'dark' period, and many of the Patriot Act's powers were restored two days later with the passing of the USA Freedom Act- though the new law arguably reined surveillance powers in a bit.

So what does it all mean? How will the transition play out? And can we believe the title of the new bill? Can we expect the USA Freedom Act to indeed spread Freedom throughout the USA, much like the Patriot Act was the definition of all Actions most Patriotic?

Well... it's a start. A very small start. It's the first lumbering steps of a long marathon. (Check out that sports reference.) Much of the Patriot Act remains intact. The part of the Act familiar to most, however, is the NSA's bulk data collection program. This has ended with the lapsing of the Patriot Act in a sense, but only in the sense that bulk collection responsibility has moved from government to those other stalwart paragons of trust: phone companies. Phone companies who must turn over data to government if so requested.

Thus, a new dawn for mass surveillance has occurred. But a new dawn in the way that Bill Murray was technically greeted by new dawn each morning in Groundhog Day.

This week, Ireland voted YES (by vast majority) for same-sex marriage in a nationwide referendum, becoming the 20th country to do so, and the first in history to legalize marriage equality democratically. This is wonderful news for the Irish, and for global progressive thinking on the whole.

And it got me wondering: Ireland's citizens have come forward in overwhelming support of a pro-same-sex marriage agenda despite Catholic Church dominance in all walks of Irish Life. So how do other countries with strong governmental Christian ties deal with the issue?

The answer, it turns out, is sometimes quite well. This cartoon highlights the various nations that have found no problem in having both an official Christian State religion, and a legal right for all people to marry freely. And then of course, one nation that has a bit more trouble with both.

Who will the Koch Brothers choose to be their Presidential pet? Will it be Walker, Rubio, Bush, Paul, Cruz, or one of the myriad others continually emerging, fresh-faced and climate-change-denying, from the woodwork? It's hard yet to say, with a litter so large. All we know for certain is eventually, one cat will get all the kibbles.
