So, I'm on a nursery rhyme/kiddie lit kick lately. I blame this phenomenon on the impending 18th birthday of my younger child.

One thing I notice about nursery rhymes is that many of them tend to be of counting-down genre similar to "99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall"...Five little monkeys jumping on the bed, three little angels all dressed in white... But shorter, for the shorter attention span of little children. And minus the alcohol. Still, looking at these songs today, I think that maybe teachers of preschool and kindergarten were desperate to find ways to kill time.

Anyway, about those angels "trying to get to heaven on the end of a kite". Why were angels forced to resort to such crude methods in an ultimately vain attempt to get into heaven? Had they been cast out of heaven? And if so, why?

There are serious theological questions here.

UPDATE Chicago visit less fun than initially expected.

And, actually, I'm kind of going for understatement there...

So, in a recent diary/journal, I had just posted that I had been in the hospital yet again. Not as bad an illness this time around...last time I had almost DIED of blood loss due to bleeding ulcers which I had no idea that I had. I know there are just a crapload of cool things to do in and around the city. Probably more than I could possibly remember. Only problem is, I'm here on my own, without my husband--you know, the one I married straight out of high school in August of 1987? We moved to central Ohio in 1988.

That's right. I was in the hospital AGAIN, dammit.

But maybe had some new insights.

Posted some of them here in case anyone is interested in reading them.

Having a bit of a rough day, even though I'm finally back on the "outside". Botched up my semester of teaching something fierce, but am about to start an online scoring project--evaluating high school writing samples, and then in June, if I don't somehow screw things up, I will be scoring 8th grade math.

Quick note for starters--I was not aware that SP had been somehow folded into DKos. Been awfully busy, but when I did have something to say, I generally cross-posted it at several blogs. So, my apologies if this is seen as a repeat. Mostly I am hoping to spread the word as much as possible so that a talented indie artist receives proper credit for his creativity.

Kind of ironic that plagiarism is the subject of the week in the class I'm teaching.

Years ago, Jonathan Coulton, an indie musician who has plenty of fans in our household, (took a moment out of his busy schedule to give Daughter a big hug and pose for a pic with her at Ohayocon once!) released a soft rock version of Sir Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back". He got the proper permissions and paid the proper royalties.

Last week, Fox's show Glee featured the same song on their episode Sadie Hawkins Day. Contacted, did paperwork, and made financial arrangements with Mix. But USED Coulton's unique mix. No acknowledgement in the credits, no payment to Coulton, and they didn't ask permission.

Kind of ironic that plagiarism is the subject of the week in the class I'm teaching.

Some muckety-muck on the Fox/Glee end contacted Coulton to tell him that they were on solid legal ground, and besides, Coulton should be thankful for the exposure this is giving him. Except, without publicly crediting him, how, precisely, can that be called "exposure"?

Yes, I am on Facebook (until FB eventually pisses me off enough with its intrusiveness that I finally am forced to bail.) So is my dad, and yes, I have "friended" him.

My dad is super conservative. Think Bill O'Reilly. In fact, when he gets mad, the resemblance is downright eerie. Or should I say uncanny?

I'll go with eerily uncanny.

My dad is also 76 years old and lives several hundred miles away. I don't know how much longer he'll be around, or how much actual face to face contact I will have with him in that time.

I know it's been forever since I've posted here, (not even sure how many here would remember me) but things haven't been so great around these parts. Work--don't get me started. (Currently, nonexistent.) Then there was the past October when I had to be rushed to the ER. Apparently (so I'm told) I very nearly died and got to the hospital in the nick of time. Spent a full work week in the hospital.

Three months ago I lost my best friend, Brady (my collie). He was about 15, so I guess that was a good run, but it still hurts, doesn't it. Today I learned that a friend of mine (both real life and on Facebook) had to put his 12 year old golden retriever to sleep. Ouch.

...actually, given that I sang with the choir, maybe it's more accurate to say that I took part in history. On Saturday, April 10, beginning at 4:30 in the afternoon, the first blessing of a same-sex union to take place in the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio took place. At my church, which is kind of cool--but not surprising, given that the clergy and congregation were on board for this sort of thing years before it became a possibility. It's one of the things I love about St. Stephen's.

I make the statement about being part of history in the making, in part, to remind myself that it is a big deal. Because it didn't feel that way. It was a beautiful ceremony, and very "high church" (we even sang a song in Latin), but in a way it seemed quite ordinary. And, while I knew ahead of time that someone from the Columbus Dispatch would be there, there were several people taking pictures, and I couldn't readily identify which photographer was with the press.

I've already posted about this in an Asperger's/High Functioning Autism support forum, but I seem to recall there were people here with kids on the spectrum, and we could really use some help with this.

Our 15 year old son, who has Asperger’s Syndrome, started high school a month ago. He had a bad experience in middle school (long story), but this school really seemed like a good fit for him, and we all were optimistic about this fresh start.

A couple weeks ago, I first started to hear mention of students maybe needing individual laptops to work on at school. Then I heard more about it, and with increasing urgency. It quickly became the reason our son gave whenever he hadn’t done an assignment— ALL the other kids had these laptops.

I saw the most recent offering from the McCain Girls yesterday, thanks to a tweet (Twitter posting) from 23/6.com. And I've decided something. The McCain Girls are "supporting" John McCain in much the same way Stephen Colbert supported George Bush at the White House Correspondents' Dinner a few years back.

I can totally imagine her TerminatorVision activating at this point, rapidly displaying the probabilities of various outcomes depending on whether she says yes or no. After all of her efforts to convince the regular folks that Barack Obama is the one who is elitist while she "gets" small-town America (having been raised on "pinochle and the American dream"), can she afford to say no?

"Well...(shrug). Down the hatch!"
