Well, I do remember Obama saying early on that the left had to come to play, and make him stay to the left on policies, force his hand. In reality the only mass movement bullying anyone into any position is the politically-hijacked Tea Party movement - which has pushed the entire country towards some weird suicide pact.

But Occupy Wall Street... I think it's having an effect.

I am an Obama fan at heart. I really am. Been disappointed about a lot, but he did make a great speech the other day which I'm hoping he'll follow through on - though like Krugman I am happy if this is what we get, but if this is the starting position and we really end up with something half way between the Obama vision and the Ryan plan then we've lost.

But there's a lot of things that just don't square - particularly on the criminal justice side. The refusal to follow up on clear crimes from the Bush years. The clamp down on medical marijuana. The failure to prosecute anyone of significance on Wall Street.

And now Online Poker? Really? To please who? Harry Reid's Las Vegas campaign donors and the religious right who believe poker to be gambling and therefore the work of the devil?

I am surprised that some on the left want to pick the gun control fight.

Obviously the tragedy in AZ can happen because insane people whipped up by right wing ranters on radio and TV (yes I believe this even though there's no "proof" he was a Limbaugh fan or Palinite) is able to get his hands on a hand gun with stupidly oversized magazines.

But using this to pivot to a gun control fight will undermine any benefits that could come of it.

EDIT: Can I also propose a DailyKos equivalent of Godwin's law?

"in any debate of sufficient length on DailyKos someone will accuse their opponent's position of retaining slavery if given the chance, should we choose to accept that position"

I am mellowing out after my fit of outrage and pique at Obama and remembering the lessons of the Clinton years, lessons that many on the left (myself included) don't really want to learn.

I have been harshly ranting recently and criticizing Obama, but I am starting to sober up and remember where the blame really lies for a lot of this stuff. Congress.

It reminds me of the Clinton years. Much is made about Clinton's triangulation, pushing policies that were favoured by the right wing, not getting stuff done for his base. But I remember him having a congress that didn't back him, failed to get stuff to his desk to sign. A bit like Obama.

People who have known me for a long time know how passionate I once was about politics. MSNBC used to spend as many hours on in my household as NFL Network now does. I used to be on DailyKos many, many times a day - commenting on diaries, posting my own. Not any more. I've genuinely given up.

But I have come here anyway. I am begging you - please tell me why I am wrong when I believe that the Democratic party is a complete waste of time. I believe it's a shell of a party - name only - filled with craven incompetents who stand on little or no principles. Shouldn't people and companies quit wasting time and money on the Democratic party and if they want something done find an angle that they can work with a Republican on - they know how to get things done for their backers. Where am I wrong?

Okay, so don't throw the 10-d chess analogy, or whatever it is, just because I'm suggesting a smart strategic move by Obama, that perhaps hasn't been accounted for previously, which would mean he's very smart politically. So, if the below has not been his plan, it's certainly a plausible route from here.

I think Obama is unleashing the big guns, after giving the Republicans enough rope to hang themselves - hoist on the petard of their own bigotry and incompetence.

Impeach Alito, Impeach Alito. Impeach Alito. Sorry I just don't have that much more to say on the issue. This isn't really a diary so much as an opportunity to say what really does need saying.

Supreme Court Justice heckles the President of the United States of America during the State of the Union address to the nation.

How much more does one have to do? How much further must one go before America stands up and says,"this right wing Republican extremist behavior - this deliberate, co-ordinated effort to show contempt for, and disrespect towards the office of the President of the United States of America and the current occupant of that esteemed position - has gone too far"? When will America have had enough? America is a set of ideals that is worth standing up for and defending, isn't it?

Or is the nation so devalued, is the idea that is/was America so defeated, that the rich, the powerful and their craven lackeys will be allowed to pour scorn upon it with the eyes of the world watching.

Disgusting.

So, first thanks to all the people who responded by email to THIS DIARY. It’s more pertinent in light of the Supreme Court decision that money should control politics more explicitly than it does today.

I am, as are many of you, concerned that this decision could precipitate a truly frightening turn of events in American politics. I am perhaps on the extreme end of that in that, being a Brit by origin I'm more cognizant of the real spectre of fascism and its ability to quickly take over a nation - particularly one as conformist and militarist as this. I see a Palin presidency as something that could usher in such a future. That's extreme, I get that, you don't have to buy into that to listen to the rest of my argument.

But I think the court's decision will be of declining impact over the next five to ten years for reasons I'll outline below, and therefore if we can nail the re-election of Obama we might outlive the power of the decision to destroy Democracy in America.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE DIARY RESCUE!

I've been a bit inactive on DKOS for a while, despite having been on here for many years. Disillusionment. Economy/Homelife stress. Lots of reasons.

Last night had the opposite effect on me I'd expect: I'm fuming. I'm energized. Now's the time to fight back, now the Lieberman60 strategy is dead. I have finally figured out something real & tangible that I can do to make a difference. Please help me.

Remember the Barack Obama iPhone app? It cost a lot of money but was very effective. I can & will make a similar app for EVERY Democrat seeking office in 2010. Free. No ads, no charging, no fees (open to being audited on that). I'll dedicate the necessary resources. Thousands of apps if need be. I just need info on each of our candidates standing.

I don't mean amateur half-assed apps - I make mobile applications for a living. Or rather I run a Silicon Valley startup that makes mobile apps. [Not naming it as I don't want accusations of self-promotion, and I don’t want my investors saying I am taking political sides on behalf of the company – I am not this is personal activity. Please don't ask or out the company or I may be put in an awkward position and have to not do this]

If everything were the same today but Republicans were in place of Democrats what would they do?

they'd vote for the most extreme legislation they can get with their supermajority in order to lock in constituencies for the future

but let's argue that with two independents the Democratic caucus is only 58 and they couldn't get the filibuster proof majority

they'd have let the opposition filibuster through Christmas and created a huge outrage about it - they'd have put healthcare on hold and said: Fine, the other side won't give us a public option, so we're running in 2010 as a referendum of what you want America

and they'd get their supermajority and get what they wanted done...

This community loves to hate on Chris Matthews - in my opinion because he's broadly establishment left of center and not ideologically pure. He's a talking head who does daily shows where he puts his opinion on the line. Sometimes people disagree with it, and in the current political climate that often means he becomes the enemy. He makes mistakes or his judgment is in error at times, like most people suffer from, and again that often gets him blacklisted here.

But I enjoy having the MSNBC team post Dr. Nancy during the day. I don't agree with all that's said by any of them, but it's better than the alternatives (and I do love their new graphics work, professionally).

Today Matthews successfully tears apart the Bishop who has picked the fight over Kennedy's communion and abortion rights.

I think that if the Democrats end up passing laws that further limit women's rights, with particular focus on the reproductive rights of women at the most difficult times of their lives, it will be staggering proof that the crazy right, the Religious Right has won and it's only a matter of time - a long lingering painful dragging slow deterioration though it will feel - before the insane, rightist, anti-science, anti-humanity, anti-intellectual, anti-social, terrified agenda, a combination of a desperate embrace of fascism tied to a wild escapism into fantasy worlds and cosmic wars, truly dominates your life and mine.

Okay - so don't make my first sentence a paragraph long right? Got it. Let's try to do better...
