Every day Lieberman has any role in the Senate backed by Democrats demonstrates to the country that Democrats cannot get things done.

Average people are not as stupid as the political elites seem to believe. They know what's happening. And it makes Democrats look weak and ineffective.

They saw an unpopular Bush administration repeatedly get what they wanted, even though it was not just unpopular but what they wanted was repeatedly wrong - nay, disastrous. But achieving stuff so bad shows they could get things done.

Democrats cannot... and Joe F*ck*ng Lieberman is a prime example.

Well, I have been increasingly despondent over the way this administration is going and the direction the country appears to be headed. (Which, IMHO, is a direction anyone with even vague living memory of 1930s Germany would recognise in the actions of Republicans and their thugs right now.)

So, I figure I am going to think about the deal with the drug companies, and see why this is a good thing. Why Obama's right on this one? Just to cheer myself up. It may be right may be bogus. But at least it's a line of thought that's positive when everything else is so negative...

...if this deal really brings big Pharma dollars to the table in conflict with insurance company dollars... if that's the deal being done (certainly appears to be the interpretation of many in the reportage) then what could that mean? Could mean great news.

I have been drifting away from DailyKos in recent months, for a variety of reasons. But when I do read I find a real antipathy towards those who express that they don't buy the Obama's magic jujitsu argument, and instead think things are actually not very good.

Stimulus Package
Health Care

This Presidency is going very wrong very early in ways that could be very hard to come back from. The argument "better than the other guys" is not good enough - it only gives you a shot at temporarily replacing the other guys. When you don't give people enough of a change and the other guys are ruthless people will give the other guys a shot again. And that's where I don't think Americans take seriously the threat of fascism - because that is, quite literally, what the rump of the Republican party and its most active operatives, represent today.

Damn you have to just adore the way the the Fox empire adheres to strong family values that lend to its news network an aura of authenticity and credibility to upstanding Americans who celebrate traditional, conservative family values.

Like the feature performer on American Idol singing his song "Blame It (on the alcohol)" tonight. I mean isn't that a show targeted at among other things a very strong teen and youth demographic? Isn't the bulk of its audience not of legal drinking age?

Gah. I know we live in a society absent any concept of shame nowadays. I know that Fox is beyond parody - even self-parody. I know that Rupert Murdoch's empire is a cynical cesspool into which one has to wade as a price for the odd bit of good entertainment.

But, golly, isn't this just more than a little blatant. A little too much of a f*ck you to the idiots who keep the Fox treadmill going (and in that I include myself for watching American Idol).

Why aren't we agreeing with Republicans? We ARE a banana republic. Aren't we?

First our economy is tanked by economic interests who've so completely corrupted the system that they've collapsed it from the inside...

...then those economic interests blackmail our elected political leaders into looting the treasury on their behalf, threatening to collapse the economic system even further, should they not be paid off...

...then finally a post junta party is swept to power on a popular wave and the scale of the crimes people ignored with spectacular cognitive dissonance for years come to light...

...then the intelligence community blackmails our elected political leaders into not prosecuting any of their members who participated in who-knows-how-many acts of illegality during the period of the junta.

We're a Banana Republic. It's not a stupid Republican line of attack, as many Americans just know it to be true in their gut. By attacking on "is America a Banana Republic?" Republicans can make the Democrats look on the defensive on the subject. which suddenly puts them on the wrong side of where people want their leaders to be on the issue: acknowledging we might just be a Banana Republic and doing something about it.

Okay - so I sit around wondering why no-one ever reads my diaries and then continue to post on topics irrelevant to the hot topics of the day... go figure... but again I have a bug up my ass about something...

I just don't get why so many parents have problems understanding the concept of informed consent. Parents continue to make decisions with long-lasting consequences for their children, which their children have no possibility to give informed consent for. Their children cannot give informed consent to be put into pageants that treat young girls in a highly inappropriate sexualized way, or to have non-essential elective cosmetic surgery like circumcision (hot topic round these parts so I am not going to go over that battle again here), or - and this is the point of the diary - on YouTube for the entertainment of other adults.

So before someone throws out the term concern troll - I am just concerned.

There are real reasons for being concerned about certain policies and approaches and their consequences given the momentous events unfolding all around us. One of my favourite quotes from historic man-of-the-moment Winston Churchill is: "The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close. In its place we are entering a period of consequences".

A period of consequences indeed. My fear is that we see pitchforks and torches by Labor Day.

I feel that the window for avoiding this sort if thing is rapidly closing, and that the Obama administration is just not appreciating, or is acting like it does not fully appreciate, the gravity of things. Business As Usual is not making a comeback. It's gone.

I feel that too many around here are busy lampooning and laughing at the cartoonish right wing blowhards and their congressional enablers when they should be taking what's going on far more seriously.

That's not being a concern troll. That's being concerned.

[SOME UPDATES AT BOTTOM]

So here's the thing that I just have a lot of problems figuring out:

I live in Silicon Valley. I have made reasonable money in the high-tech world for the last few years. I have a family including young children and special needs. Owning a home would be a good thing.

This last few years people have practically thrown mortgages at me. However it was clear to me that buying a home with virtually nothing down was irresponsibly reckless in particular given that the housing prices were so obviously over-inflated. It was so apparent that home prices were so out of whack and bubbling up that they were due for a significant correction. As a result the responsible thing to do - despite how tempting the cheap mortgages with virtually nothing down for these overpriced (but nice) homes might be - was to reject such offers and wait for housing prices to come down to something more reasonable and until I have a sensible deposit built up.

EDIT: when you want to talk about selfishness remember - renters are on average poorer and more disadvantaged than home owners - we are talking about shafting people our side claims to support

So there was a diary on here earlier about the Wikileaks servers being down because of an Australian censorship list. Not being critical but that seemed a little odd to me - sort of parochial to overload Wikileaks.

Well this evening reading through Tech Crunch I came across this article and its set of links which details Barclay's Tax Avoidance Schemes and the interactions of the lawyers and accountants that conspired to create labyrinthine mechanisms to avoid government(s) and therefore taxpayers of their expected contribution to the society they so greedily profited from. And Barclay's is trying to gag the Guardian which is a pretty desperate measure.

The country is edging towards a precipice. Things are very very bad economically - far worse than most realize. And as it gets worse, much worse, things will get ugly - and if these crooks persist in getting away with blatant crimes... something really must be done.

Comment early if this is something I have missed these few days I've been away from the site... so I know to let the diary go...

But... I don't get this. Why all this frothing and hoo-haa? Surely the US Congress can just pass a bill that taxes at 100% all bonuses paid out to any recipient of bonuses from companies that took bail out money.

Is there any problem with this. Any reason we cannot do this?

I just don't get it - that seems the obvious solution to this problem and (while admittedly I've been tied up with work this past week and not had time on my fave political blogs so might have missed it) I don't seem to see anyone having mentioned this as an option.

I wish our party would engage in more class warfare. I wish the rank and file around the country wanting Obama to succeed would engage in more class warfare. I wish we'd stop ceding the territory to the Republicans. It's bizarre - when I see the Democrats, and supposedly left leaning commentators shying away from it I feel like I am taking crazy pills. It's a poker-bluff when the Republicans tell us they have a stronger hand if the Dem's raise the ante and come in all class warfare. They aren't going to go all-in over this. They know deep down it's a total loser.

Class warfare? I got your class warfare right here...

McCain doing the whole "health" of the mother thing - the air "" with his fingers... isn't that just incredibly offensive?

I don't know I just think that if anyone watching this who has had any experience with child birth picked up on this surely that's fatal.

My wife gave birth to our second child in pretty tough circumstances. She lost two pints of blood. Gave me a renewed appreciation for modern medicine. She'd have died in times past.

Childbirth is a dangerous circumstance. The greatest request we ever make in society is to ask women to put their lives on the line to provide the next generation by giving birth to them.
