The Benefit Bank is a project which uses technology to improve the lives of low income Americans. Through the use of software and trained volunteers the program allows the needy to fill out one application which can be generated to receive assistance from a wide range of public and private resources. During stops in the South this week the Congressional Black Caucus Institute and National Council Of Churches sought volunteers and partners to help expand the program. The program has so far been opened in 48 sites in Pennsylvania, Florida, and Kansas including ACORN Housing, Jewish Employment and Vocational Service, and Germantown Avenue Crisis Ministry.

Gennaro Pellegrini, Jr was 31 years old, a Philadelhia cop and an up and coming boxer. He died yesterday far away from home fighting in a war he was against.

He was just two weeks away from finishing up his six-year stint in the Guard when he was told that his tour of duty was being extended and that he would serve in Iraq for at least a year, maybe longer. The news could not have come at a worse time for Pellegrini. He was training for his first pro fight, newly engaged to be married, and settling into his job as a Philadelphia police officer, just like his dad.

A Kentucky couple missing off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica has attracted very little media attention outside of their hometown area. Mark and Laura Vockery of Ashland, Kentucky and three fishermen disappeared last week while on a fishing trip on a 31-foot boat that was last inspected in 2001. Local newspapers and television stations such as WKYT have run extensive coverage. Kentucky Congressman Ben Chandler was successful in obtaining a "Coast Guard cutter and a massive C-130 transport plane" to search the Pacific for the 5 people who are missing.

"We've been working with the Coast Guard and the embassy and the Overseas Citizens Service," said Loren Carl, a field representative for Chandler.

It is a remarkable turn-around from a seemingly impregnable position. Just a few years ago, Daley was known for his fiscal responsibility and civic pride. He was praised for restoring the downtown and beautifying the city with trees and planters. He took control of the city schools, quelled their querulous labor union, and is boasting of improving test scores among city school children.

A grassroots group for Hillary Clinton will begin running television ads in New Hampshire this week. Ad spots will run in the Manchester, Concord, Portsmouth, Salem and Nashua markets and are paid for by the Miami Beach based grassroots group Hillary Now!.

The group has no official ties to Clinton's office, but its president, Bob Kunst, of Miami Beach, Fla., said he is laying the foundation for her possible bid for the presidency.

A new poll of Florida Democrats shows Hillary Clinton is the early favorite for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. Clinton has the support of 35% of Democrats polled followed by former Vice President Al Gore with 17%.

Many Democratic Party supporters in the Sunshine State want New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton to run for president, according to a poll by Strategic Vision. 35 per cent
of respondents in Florida want the former first lady to be the
Democratic nominee in 2008, a three per cent increase since June.

Mark Monford had a great column this past week on living in a troubled world with BushCo in charge.

This all comes to mind as I realize, with increasing sense of dread and alarm and a weird sense of fatalistic ennui, that if any of the dire prognostications for the world soon comes to pass, if the oil crisis strikes as violently as predicted and/or if the eviscerated U.S. economy spirals us into a new and violent Great Depression 2.0 and/or if BushCo does indeed succeed in bringing the wrath of an angry spiteful homophobic God down upon the swarming gay-lovin' tofu-sucking heathen masses, I might not be as well prepared as I'd like. ...

Dalton Trumbo's 1939 book had some of the most graphic passages ever written about the horrors of war. It is told by a young soldier Joe Bonham who looses his arms, legs eyes, ears, mouth, and nose in WWI. The horrifically wounded soldier is conscious and remains alive only inside his head reliving old memories and fighting nightmares and dreaming of finding a way to communicate to the hospital staff that he wants to become a show in a carnival to let others know what war is really about.

In an article in the Jackson (Mississippi) Clarion-Ledger some of the jurors in the murder trial of Edgar Ray Killen have revealed for the first time what went on in the jury room. Killen was on trial for the 1964 murders of civil rights workers James Chaney, Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman near Philadelphia, Mississippi.

In initial discussions, some jurors believed Killen was guilty of orchestrating the trio's slayings. Others believed he was simply guilty of having a big mouth.
