North Carolina - Get Out the Vote: Sell me!

As a proud parent of two girls (a three year old and a one month old), I'm hoping to take advantage of the "early voting" for the North Carolina primary election next week. I've made up my mind for the top of the ticket, as has my wife (we both moved from Edwards to Obama), but the only thing stopping us from voting is... well... the rest of the ballot. While I follow the presidential race reasonably closely, I know virtually nothing about the rest of the races on the ticket, other than the bad taste in my mouth from some of the television ads I've seen. I'm hoping to get some informed opinions from the Kossack crew. You can consider it part of a "get out the vote" effort (at least on a small scale) if you'd like.

In the news today, another report of dangerous goods imported from China. Around half a million tires, sold under non-descript brand names such as Westlake, Compass, Telluride and YKS, are apparently faulty. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is supposedly going to issue a recall, although there's a battle over who should pay for a recall, and who will be left holding the bag. In the meantime, at least a hundred thousand people are driving on tires that are likely faulty, and could blow out at any time. If you're one of those people, be very careful, and get your tires checked out.

But I didn't sit down to write because of tires. I am writing because I'm tired of hearing about cheap-assed products being sold without any care about safety or quality. And I'm writing because I'm amazed at how this problem has become so widespread, yet it's hardly being talked about.

Due to recent events in the Republican community, I've recruited the services of a Republican Leader. Because he's high up in the leadership, he's chosen to use the nickname "Denny" to protect his privacy.

Dear Denny: I'm a member of the congress, and I've, well, been caught looking for "congress" from several young boys. I tried denying it, but somehow the damn liberal media got hold of my emails and even some late-night instant messages. Since I'm not gay, it should be obvious that when I'm talking to young boys about having sex with me, I'm just looking to mentor them in a godly, Christ-like fashion. How can I make this whole thing go away? -- Mark in Florida

Just a heads up... Bill O'Reilly is on David Letterman tonight, and he apparently has a few interesting things to say to Falafel boy. As noted here, the exchange gets interesting:

Letterman: "See, I'm very concerned about people like yourself who don't have nothing but endless sympathy for a woman like Cindy Sheehan. Honest to Christ." [audience applause]

and..

Letterman: "I'm not smart enough to debate you point to point on this, but I have the feeling, I have the feeling about 60 percent of what you say is crap. [audience laughter] But I don't know that for a fact. [more audience applause]

This exchange is apparently on the "highlights" on the Late Show homepage (though I haven't yet verified that myself).
This might be worth watching... ?

This evening, NPR ran a segment titled "Counting a New Breed of Conservatives", which profiles a segment of the voting public called "Pro Government Conservatives". (You can listen to a web-casts of the segment at that address). This group predominantly voted for Bush, and still "support Bush", even though they were opposed to virtually all of Bush's policies.

They're getting hurt by Bush's policies. And I can't make myself care. Read More

Newsweek: The Rove Factor?

The Newsweek story on K-K-Karl Rove's role in the Plame case is now out. It's not nearly as damaging as it could be, but it does say what Lawrence O'Donnell said it would.

The e-mails surrendered by Time Inc., which are largely between Cooper and his editors, show that one of Cooper's sources was White House deputy chief of staff Karl Rove, according to two lawyers who asked not to be identified because they are representing witnesses sympathetic to the White House. Cooper and a Time spokeswoman declined to comment. But in an interview with NEWSWEEK, Rove's lawyer, Robert Luskin, confirmed that Rove had been interviewed by Cooper for the article. It is unclear, however, what passed between Cooper and Rove.

There's not that much else in there, but it does get the story out front. It will be intersting to see how it develops in the next few days and weeks...

The U.S. military in Iraq has been holding face-to-face meetings with some Iraqi leaders of the insurgency there, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and the U.S. commander in charge of Iraq confirmed yesterday.

Asked to respond to a report that U.S. military representatives had meetings with several Sunni Iraqi insurgents twice in June, Rumsfeld told Fox News that "there have probably been many more than that" and described the contacts as an effort to "split people off and get some people to be supportive" of the political process in Iraq.

So, did he offer them therapy? Or cake and ice cream? Read More

Supreme court overturns Arthur Andersen conviction

The Supreme Court on Tuesday overturned the conviction of the Arthur Andersen accounting firm for destroying Enron Corp.-related documents before the energy giant's collapse.

In a unanimous opinion, justices said the former Big Five accounting firm's June 2002 conviction was improper. It said the jury instructions at trial were too vague and broad for jurors to determine correctly whether Andersen obstructed justice.
