Stéphane Frédéric Hessel is a diplomat, former ambassador, French resistance fighter. Born German, he obtained French nationality in 1937. He participated in the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948.

He speaks out today in support of taking action to support human rights for Palestinians.

Israel has one very difficult image problem, to say the least. Getting as much love as the execs of BP at the moment. It is so bad, that it seems that it is getting some of the same treatment South Africa got when it too was practicing a (somewhat milder) form of apartheid.

If you are at least of a certain age, many of you remember when artists came together to oppose apartheid and refused to play in Sun City, then South Africa's version of Las Vegas...

So that now that The Pixies have canceled their concert following the massacre of unarmed human rights activists in international waters... the Israeli Ministry of Culture has responded...

Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) is today beginning to circulate to colleagues the following letter concerning the commando raid by Israel upon a Turkish ship in international waters:

Israeli commandos, acting at the direction of the State of Israel, attacked and seized a Turkish ship in international waters, in the Mediterranean Sea.
At least nine were killed in the incident aboard the Mavi Marmara. Hundreds of civilians were taken into custody and goods were confiscated. Since the United States considers Israel our most important ally in the region, whose survival is a of primary concern, it is incumbent upon the Commander in Chief to call Israel to an accounting for its conduct in planning and executing the deadly military attack in international waters upon a peaceful flotilla carrying citizens from over 50 countries.

If the world is lucky to survive a few more decades, i have little doubt that many young people of the late 21st century will be asking their parents "what did you do to stop the siege on Gaza, how was it allowed, why were so many silent?". That question will be asked here in the US especially, because of US political complicity.

A look at the facts of the Gaza siege, and our collective effort to end the siege (not merely make it a bit more bearable).

An American solidarity activist was shot in the face with a tear gas canister during a demonstration in Qalandiya, today. Emily Henochowicz is currently in Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem undergoing surgery to remove her left eye, following the demonstration that was held in protest to Israel’s murder of at least 10 civilians aboard the Gaza Freedom Flotilla in international waters this morning.

21-year old Emily Henochowicz was hit in the face with a tear gas projectile fired directly at her by an Israeli soldier during the demonstration at Qalandiya checkpoint today. - International Solidarity Movement

This will be a memorial day peace activist will remember for a long time.

The victim is a young art student who cares for justice and peace.

Israel military has boarded at least one of the ships, and according to Turkish TV 2 have been killed by Israeli fire.

Still trying to figure out exactly what is happening.

Let it be clear, however, that Israel has committed an act of piracy by boarding these ships in international waters.

Such is the nature of US politics. Pandering is required. This will be something to watch. It won't be pretty, but it will include the usual wining and dining and photo-ops.

Netanyahu is coming to Washington DC. and oh, what a opportune time. Just after the Israeli Navy intercepts and confiscates humanitarian aid in international waters destined for Gaza. (as is likely, but we don't know exactly what will happen. You can follow the latest here). And just after more Palestinians are threatened with eviction orders in Jerusalem.

Israel. The country that knows how to detain on a massive scale. It is set to detain several hundred aid workers from all over the world who are attempting to enter Gaza.

Israel on Thursday unveiled a massive makeshift detention center in the country's main southern port and announced the end of days of intense naval maneuvers, vowing to stop a flotilla of hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists trying to break a 3-year blockade of the Gaza Strip this weekend.- Yahoo News

Hey, 20% of the Palestinian population has been held in some form of Israeli detention since 1967. So what's 800 more?

But this is interesting. On what charge will they arrest these people, whose only desire is to sail on international waters directly into Gaza?

"We have to remember: These people are entering Israel illegally," said Maya Kadosh, a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman.

Say what? Is Gaza part of Israel?

The story goes like this:

Henry David Thoreau sits in jail for his refusal to pay war taxes to support slavery and the War on Mexico and is seen by his friend Ralph Waldo Emerson. "What are you doing in jail," Emerson asks and Thoreau says, "What are you doing out of jail?"

This past week, Israeli peace activist Ezra Nawi and friends had a picnic before he was to do a month-long prison term. More peace activists are likely to follow.

What are we doing while we are out of jail?

Three ships carrying pro-Palestinian activists have set off from Turkey to Gaza on Saturday, as part of the nine-ship 'Freedom Flotilla' convoy, a large attempt by international aid groups to breach the Israeli blockade of Gaza.

The three ships that set off from Turkey are due to reach Greece, where they will join the other six before heading to Gaza, despite warnings from Israel and instructions from Defense Minister Ehud Barak to the Israeli Navy to intercept the convoy at the Gaza shore.

The organization of Gush Shalom has called on the Israeli government to allow the aid convoy to reach Gaza. - Haaretz

Later this month, ships from all over the world will converge in the Mediterranean and set sail for the occupied and besieged Gaza Strip. This international coalition is called the Freedom Flotilla.

The Free Gaza Movement has sailed eight missions to Gaza in the past three years, five of them successful. The last three were violently stopped by the Israeli Navy; the boat Dignity was rammed three times and the Spirit of Humanity turned back in January 2009, then seized and all aboard arrested. - A Force More Powerful
