  •  In addition to needing income, people need (0+ / 0-)

what is never measured in economics--the unpaid work of family members. . . . . esp. wives, mothers, and other relatives who cook, clean, shop, help raise the kids, nurse the sick, grow fruit and veg in the garden, etc.

I saw a TV program about a women in New Zealand, a sheep farmer and politician, who did a brilliant study on the subject. One example was of a third world country where 'unemployed' women who had plots of land were able to feed their families. . . .but not any more once they were taken off the land and put to work at paid jobs in factories.

The paid work showed up as a positive economic value while growing food and raising chickens and taking care of the family showed up as zero.
