Lorelei, for your immediate safety, you can swear out a Protection from Abuse order that requires your spouse to stay away from you.  I'm surpised that didn't happen as part of the arrest for DV?  Have you talked with anyone from the domestic violence network?  Not sure what part of the state you're in, but there are DV projects in York County, Portland, Lewiston/Auburn, Augusta, Bangor, Rockland,  etc, etc. and they can offer you far better advice than me.
I believe some of the shelters take dogs, esp. service dogs.  Others have arrangements with their local animal shelters for boarding pets during the time women stay at the shelter.

DV staff will have expertise on helping you with disability, SSI, etc. and also get you started on finding affordable/subsidized housing.   Even if you don't go into the shelter, they are a wealth of information and support.

I'm sorry I don't have anything more permanent to offer tonight, but I'll keep thinking about it. Do you have good solid references you could provide someone who might be wiling to open up their home?  Sorry to ask, but I only know of you as a screen name, and anyone I talk to is going to want to know more than that.

Good luck and I'll keep thinking!
