  •  Ah, but the reason that what happened to Kansas is (10+ / 0-)

such a tragedy is that Kansas used to be one of the most progressive states in the nation, even though they tended Republican. It was the progressive wing of the old style Republicans, like Teddy Roosevelt. They had a major progressive newspaper that lasted many decades.

The Christianists took over and convinced everybody to vote against their own interests because abortion.

    •  Kansas sorta takes the prize (8+ / 0-)

For the greatest political transformation if any state. It was a radical Union state during the civil war, and you are right - it was a center of the populist progressive movement a century ago. Seems like it is a state given to extremes. Let's all help the pendulum swing back!

    •  I always thought farm Republicanism was (5+ / 0-)

      "common sense" Republicanism.

I gotta believe that beyond the Christianist cultists that have taken over the county committees and school boards that, that well of pragmatic sense is still there.  Brownback seems to have alienated folks of sense and fair-mindedness enough to push them across the partisan divide.  After all, Kathleen Sebelius did win two terms, and the candidate for Lieutenant Governor, Jill Docking, is another in the Docking family dynasty of Democrats that have two Governors and other statewide office holders among 'em.
