    ... who was Scottish, someone read some excerpts from a book written by a Scottish immigrant who settled in the South (I think it was the Atlanta area, actually) and she described several humorous incidents in which the differences in the two versions of English led to misunderstandings (asking someone for a "rubber" to erase pencil markings, for instance). The author told the story about the cable installer who insisted on calling her a Brit. No, I'm Scottish, she insisted. Well, it's all the same thing, he told her dismissively. So she called him a Yankee, and when the multi-generation Southerner protested indignantly, she said, well, it's all the same thing, that's what we call all Americans.

      yes, the "natives" do insist on being Scottish, not British, though they were very good at accepting neighbors from down south in our neighborhood.  That was probably because it was a brand new "town" outside of the city of Edinburgh, and there was a very mixed bunch of folks who moved in.

      I have to wonder what the cable installer's face looked like after her final remark.  I hope he started realizing it's a new world out there.
