"The quote on the Statue of Liberty doesn't say 'give me your English-speaking only, Christianity-believing, heterosexual masses.' It says 'give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses tempest-tost'."

No, it doesn't say that, either.  What is does say is

"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tos't to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

the meaning in general is maintained

"Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing." Arundhati Roy
