    In fact, their survival rate in the camps was even lower than that of Jewish people.

    Even today, gay people are routinely and legally tortured to death in many countries simply for being gay, and the Bush administration and the Catholic Church opposed a U.N. resolution that condemned the practice.

    Less than 10 years ago, being gay was a criminal offense punishable by prison time in the United States.

    Yesterday, in Spain (a country that has marriage equality), a man who murdered two gay men by stabbing them 57 times claimed as a defense that he was freaked out by them propositioning him -- and he was acquitted.

    I don't think the comparison is at all extreme. To the extent that gays across time and cultures can be aggregated for the purpose of comparison, it's hard to come up with a more historically oppressed group.
