    the American media environment is. The ability of the educated, and those with time and inclination to ferret out a half decent picture of what's going on, is causing them to project onto the mainstream a level of informedness or at least access that's orders of magnitude overestimated.

    Maybe the wreckage to the infrastructure of governance for the people that's going to be done this year and next might give more of us a better idea of the information environment that got us here.

    I fear the more likely response is even greater praise for our system and more of the long standing complaints that everybody in the country using it is letting it down.

      Let's remember that there was a good decade or more where as Atrios says, there were no liberals allowed on TV, ending only when Olbermann broke out of the sportscaster mode.

      It wasn't even that all the prominent voices were conservatives, neoliberals or villagers (but I repeat myself), but that it was hard to find anyone genuinely on the left anywhere on TV and precious few in the editorial pages of big newspapers.

      It's been a long time with just one tune playing over and over, it's no wonder the people who pay only partial attention find themselves humming along.
