    It appears to me Marcus has passed up on some obvious ways to increase profitability while maintaining the political focus.  The site doesn't look much like HuffPo for example.  He's also emphatically declined any interest in selling it.

        The usual way to make lots of money with a successful website is to sell it off.

        I doubt Arianna would ever have made anywhere near $400M in profits off HuffPo in what remains of her working life.

        I don't doubt profit plays some role in markos' thinking and decisions for the site, but boiling it down to a pure business venture I don't buy.  Maybe that's how you would run a politics web site, but not everyone is like that.

        Markos isn't alone, Craig Newmark has refused to cash in on Craigslist.  It's rare but it does happen.
